Tanzania Deports Activist Boniface Mwangi After Three-Day Ordeal: “He’s Alive, But Not Okay”

Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi is finally home—but the scars of his ordeal remain. After three days in detention in Tanzania, Mwangi was deported by road and found alive in Ukunda, according to his family.

“He is alive, but not okay. He has been rushed to hospital for a medical check-up,” said his lawyer James Wanjeri.

Mwangi had vanished on Monday after traveling to Tanzania to attend a court hearing for opposition leader Tundu Lissu. Since then, his whereabouts were unknown, sparking fear, outrage, and a near-diplomatic standoff.

Kenya Fights for Its Son

Tension flared when Tanzanian officials refused to give answers. Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that all attempts to reach Mwangi had been blocked.

“Despite several requests, we were denied consular access and updates on Mr. Mwangi,” a Ministry statement read.

The situation worsened on Thursday when the Kenyan government invoked the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations (1963). The treaty guarantees foreign nationals access to their embassies when detained.

“We are deeply concerned about his health and well-being,” the Ministry insisted.

Nation on Edge: Public Outcry Grows

As hours passed with no news, Kenyans took to the streets. Hundreds of activists gathered in Nairobi’s CBD and near the Tanzanian Embassy, demanding answers.

Their message was clear: “Bring Boniface home!”

Earlier in the week, Tanzanian police had detained and deported several regional figures, including:

  • Former Justice Minister Martha Karua
  • Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga
  • Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid
  • Activist Hanifa Adan
  • Ugandan journalist Agather Atuhaire

All were barred entry or swiftly deported after landing at Julius Nyerere International Airport.

Legal and Moral Questions Raised

The international community has taken note. Former Chief Justice David Maraga condemned the actions.

“Detaining Mwangi without legal counsel or court access violates international law,” Maraga said.

What Next for Mwangi?

Mwangi is recovering in hospital. His family says he’ll address the media soon. The ordeal has left a nation rattled but more determined than ever to fight for human rights.
