UN Slams Ruto Government Over Police Brutality on Peaceful Protesters

The United Nations has condemned Kenya’s government for what it calls excessive and unlawful use of force on peaceful protesters. This follows disturbing reports of police allegedly shooting and killing demonstrators during the June 25 protests.

“We are deeply concerned by reports of several deaths of protesters and many more injuries to protesters and police officers during demonstrations in Kenya on Wednesday,”
— United Nations Human Rights Commission.

The protests, which saw thousands take to the streets to mark a year since last year’s deadly demonstrations, ended in tragedy for many families. The death toll from the protests stands at over 16, with dozens more injured—some critically.

UN Accuses Government of Violating Law

In a powerful statement issued on June 26, the UN accused President William Ruto’s administration of contradicting both international law and Kenya’s Constitution by attempting to suppress peaceful demonstrations.

“The rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are cornerstones of the rule of law and must be respected and upheld by all,”
— UN Human Rights Commission.

The UN stressed that under international human rights law, the use of lethal force by police is only acceptable when absolutely necessary—to protect life or prevent serious injury from an imminent threat.

Urgent Call for Justice and Accountability

The UN urged swift investigations and demanded accountability for the violence witnessed. It asked the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to move fast in probing the matter and to ensure justice is served.

“We underscore the importance of prompt, thorough, independent and transparent investigations to bring those responsible to justice per due process and to prevent recurrence,”
— UN Statement.

The international body emphasized that justice for the victims must not be delayed, and called on the Kenyan government to act decisively.

Protesters Met With Brutality Instead of Dialogue

What was planned as a peaceful remembrance quickly descended into chaos. Shocking videos and images circulated online show police clashing with demonstrators, using tear gas, rubber bullets, and in some cases, live ammunition.

The crackdown has sparked both domestic outrage and global condemnation, with civil rights activists, opposition leaders, and international observers urging the government to change its approach.

The Nation Waits for Answers

As Kenya mourns its dead, the demand for justice grows louder. Families of victims want answers, and citizens are questioning the state’s commitment to democracy and human rights.
