Uhuru Denies Directing Gachagua to Organise Mt Kenya Leaders’ Meeting
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has dismissed claims circulating on social media alleging that he directed Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua to organise a major political meeting bringing together leaders from the Mt Kenya region.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his office, Uhuru described the claims as false and misleading, cautioning members of the public against sharing unverified information attributed to him. The statement was released by his Secretary of Communication, Kanze Dena Mararo, amid growing online speculation linking the retired President to ongoing political mobilisation efforts in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.

“The Office of the 4th President, Uhuru Kenyatta, has observed with concern the deliberate circulation of false and misleading content on social media platforms,” the statement read.
According to the former President’s office, the posts being widely shared were unauthorised and did not reflect Uhuru’s views or position on Mt Kenya politics or any ongoing political processes. The office further clarified that any official communication from Uhuru would only be issued through verified platforms associated with the Office of the 4th President or through official Jubilee Party channels.
“We urge all citizens to exercise vigilance, verify information before sharing, and avoid amplifying falsehoods that erode public trust. The dignity of the Office of the 4th President of the Republic of Kenya remains paramount,” the statement added.
The clarification follows viral claims suggesting that Uhuru had instructed Gachagua to organise his political allies ahead of a high-level meeting aimed at uniting Mt Kenya leaders to chart a common political direction. Another post, dated January 26 and also attributed to Uhuru, alleged that the former President was unwell and deeply troubled by the country’s political trajectory, including claims of children being teargassed during a church service.
Uhuru’s office categorically denied the authenticity of the statements, terming them fabrications designed to mislead the public and drag the retired President into active political contestation.

The developments come at a time when the political climate in the Mt Kenya region remains fluid, with competing leaders seeking to consolidate influence ahead of the 2027 General Election. Gachagua, a former Deputy President, has in recent months intensified calls for unity within the region, positioning himself as a central figure in efforts to rally Mt Kenya leaders under a single political banner.
However, Uhuru has largely maintained a public distance from Gachagua’s political activities. The former President has previously stated that his Jubilee Party will support former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for the presidency in the 2027 polls, signalling a different political alignment from that being pursued by the DCP leader.
As the race to 2027 gathers momentum, Jubilee Party has also undertaken significant changes to its leadership structure. Last Thursday, the party announced the appointment of Jeremiah Kioni as Deputy Party Leader as part of a broader reorganisation.
In a statement dated January 22, Jubilee said former Narok Member of Parliament Richard Ole Kenta had been appointed Secretary General, replacing Kioni. Other appointments approved during the meeting include Zack Kinuthia as Deputy Secretary General, Yassin Noor Haji as National Organising Secretary, and Vincent Mogaka Kimoki as National Chairperson.

Additional appointments include Dan Mwangi as Executive Director, Kiembi Gitura as Director of Elections, Peter Kados as Chair of the MCA Caucus, and Saitoti Torome as Jubilee Foundation Public Policy Director.
With political realignments continuing across the country, Uhuru’s latest statement appears aimed at drawing a clear line between his current role as a retired statesman and the intensifying succession politics ahead of the next general election.
