U.S. Citizen Extradited From Kenya After Hiding for Over Three Years to Face Murder Charges
A United States citizen who had been on the run for more than three years has been extradited from Kenya to face serious criminal charges linked to a fatal drug overdose in the U.S., marking the latest high-profile cooperation between Kenyan and American law enforcement agencies.
According to reports from U.S. authorities, the suspect was arrested on October 31, 2025, in Mire area, Kajiado County, following months of investigations into his whereabouts. The arrest and subsequent extradition were carried out through a joint operation involving Kenya’s National Police Service (NPS) and multiple U.S. security agencies.

The operation was spearheaded by the Kandiyohi County Attorney’s Office and the United States Attorney’s Office, with support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Marshals Service. Kenyan authorities provided logistical and operational assistance during the arrest and handover process.
Following his extradition, the suspect was arraigned in a U.S. District Court on Tuesday, January 6, on federal charges of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, according to a statement from the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office.
“This arrest and extradition demonstrate our continued commitment to ensuring that individuals charged with serious crimes are held accountable, regardless of where they attempt to flee,” the sheriff’s office said.
The man was initially arrested in 2022 in connection with the overdose death of a 19-year-old woman at a residence outside New London, Minnesota. An autopsy later revealed that the victim died from the effects of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid that has been at the center of a growing drug crisis in the United States.
Following investigations, prosecutors charged the suspect at the Kandiyohi County District Court with multiple offences, including second-degree manslaughter, third-degree murder, second-degree drug possession, and two counts of first-degree drug sale.
Court records indicate that after posting a $300,000 (approximately KSh38.7 million) bail, the suspect was released under strict conditions, including an order barring him from leaving the state of Minnesota without written approval from the court. Authorities say he violated those terms by fleeing the country, prompting an international manhunt.

According to the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect is expected to be arraigned in Minnesota at a later date on additional federal charges, including conspiracy to distribute fentanyl resulting in death, distribution of fentanyl resulting in death, and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.
The case comes amid heightened international efforts to combat transnational crime, particularly drug trafficking and fugitive movements across borders. Kenyan authorities have increasingly worked with foreign governments to track and extradite suspects wanted abroad.
The extradition follows a similar case reported three months earlier involving a national of Côte d’Ivoire who was extradited from Kenya to the United States over allegations of conspiring to smuggle firearms into the U.S.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 25, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga confirmed that the suspect was extradited after Kenya received a formal request from the United States on July 24.
“The extradition was effected following a formal request by the United States and in accordance with Kenya’s legal framework and international obligations,” Ingonga said.
According to court documents cited by the DPP, the suspect and an accomplice allegedly conspired between October and November 2018 to illegally purchase firearms in several U.S. states, including Ohio and Maryland, with the intention of exporting them to Côte d’Ivoire.
“Court records show that the suspects planned and executed the illegal acquisition of firearms for export outside the United States,” Ingonga added.

As cross-border crime continues to pose global challenges, officials say such extraditions highlight the growing importance of international legal cooperation in ensuring justice is served.
