Trump Questions US Military Presence in Kenya and Somalia: “America Is Under Invasion From Within”

A storm of uncertainty now surrounds US military operations in East Africa after President Donald Trump publicly questioned their necessity. On Tuesday, September 30, Trump addressed top military leaders, challenging the continued deployment of American forces in Kenya and Somalia.

“Why Are We Policing Kenya?”—Trump Calls for Shift in Military Focus

Trump expressed frustration over decades of US involvement in foreign conflicts. He argued that America must now turn inward and confront domestic threats.

“Only in recent decades did politicians somehow come to believe that our job is to police the far reaches of Kenya and Somalia,” Trump said. “We are under invasion from within, no different from a foreign enemy,” he added.

He claimed that internal enemies were harder to identify because they don’t wear uniforms.

“At least when they wear uniforms, you can take them away,” Trump remarked.

“We’re Sending Troops Home”—Trump Announces Domestic Military Deployment

To address what he called “enemies from within,” Trump revealed plans to deploy military personnel to major US cities.

“We will send troops to New York, San Francisco, and Chicago,” he announced.

However, he did not clarify how this shift would affect ongoing counterterrorism operations in Kenya and Somalia.

“Al Shabaab Still a Threat”—US Operations Along Kenyan Border Continue

In recent months, US forces have conducted airstrikes and joint ground missions near the Kenyan-Somali border. These efforts, coordinated through the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), aim to dismantle Al Shabaab networks.

“These operations have reduced terrorism in the Horn of Africa,” a Pentagon source noted.

Despite Trump’s remarks, no official directive has been issued to halt these missions.

“Kenya Is a Key Ally”—Military Cooperation Faces Review

Just last year, Kenya was designated a non-NATO ally by the US under President Joe Biden. The move boosted Kenya’s access to military and economic support.

“This partnership has strengthened regional security,” a Kenyan official said.

However, Trump’s administration has now initiated a review of Kenya’s status. Congressman James Risch proposed amendments to the National Defence Authorisation Act for 2026.

The review will assess Kenya’s diplomatic alignment with US interests and determine whether the non-NATO designation should remain.

“Uncertainty Looms”—East Africa Watches Washington Closely

As Trump shifts focus to domestic threats, Kenya and Somalia await clarity on future US involvement.

“We need consistency, not confusion,” a regional analyst warned.
