Terror in the Night: Over 20 Homes Reduced to Ashes in Athi River Inferno
Panic and heartbreak gripped Njuguini area in Athi River on Thursday night after a mysterious fire tore through a residential block, leaving over 20 families homeless. The blaze, which erupted around 8 p.m., caught many residents indoors, forcing them to flee for their lives.
Families Flee as Flames Devour Homes
Eyewitnesses say the fire spread rapidly, engulfing homes before anyone could react. Residents scrambled to rescue belongings, but the flames proved too fierce.

“We tried to save what we could, but the fire moved too fast,” said a distraught resident.
Within minutes, the entire building was ablaze. Property worth millions was lost, and families were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
Night in the Cold, Shelter in Strangers’ Homes
With their homes destroyed, many victims spent the night in the cold. Others sought refuge in neighboring estates across Machakos County.
“We had nowhere to go. Our children slept outside,” shared a mother of three.
Although no fatalities have been reported, the emotional toll is immense. Children cried, parents mourned, and the community watched helplessly.
Firefighters Arrive Late, Flames Already Won
The fire raged for nearly two hours before disaster teams from Nairobi and Machakos arrived. By then, most of the building had already collapsed.

“We did our best, but the damage was already done,” said a firefighter at the scene.
Videos circulating online showed the building fully engulfed in flames. Residents stood at a distance, watching their lives go up in smoke.
Police Launch Investigation, Cause Still Unknown
Police have since launched investigations to determine the cause of the fire. Early reports suggest it may have started inside one of the homes, but details remain unclear.
“We are working to establish the exact cause. No one has been arrested yet,” said a police officer.
Authorities have urged affected families to seek temporary shelter and promised to support recovery efforts.
Another Fire, Another Tragedy
This incident adds to a growing list of fire disasters across Kenya. Just two weeks ago, a blaze in Tassia Estate, Embakasi, destroyed several homes. That fire also spread quickly, leaving families devastated.
“We need better fire safety measures. These tragedies are becoming too frequent,” said a local leader.
