Terror at Twilight: Pumwani Fire Leaves Seven Families Homeless, Sparks Outcry Over Safety
A devastating fire tore through the Rokongo area of Pumwani Highrise, Kamukunji, on Wednesday evening, leaving seven families homeless and countless others shaken. The blaze, which erupted around 6:30 p.m., quickly engulfed homes, forcing residents to flee with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
Flames Swallow Homes, But Lives Spared
Although no lives were lost, one man, Ali Kiragu, suffered a broken hand during the chaos. He was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for treatment.
“We thank God no one died, but the pain of losing everything is unbearable,” said a distraught resident.
Community Rallies Amid Ruins
As smoke cleared, residents gathered around the charred remains of their homes. Videos captured by Kenyans.co.ke showed people trying to salvage what little remained—burnt utensils, twisted metal, and scorched furniture.
“We are already organizing aid, shelter, and food for the affected families,” confirmed a Kamukunji Voice representative.
The community’s response was immediate. Volunteers began collecting donations, while local leaders called for urgent government intervention.
A Pattern of Destruction
Shockingly, this marks the second fire in just two days. On Tuesday, flames erupted in Shauri Moyo, another part of Pumwani. Firefighters again responded quickly, and thankfully, no fatalities were reported.
“We’re living in fear. Fires are becoming part of our daily lives,” lamented a Shauri Moyo resident.
Earlier in May, a 3:00 a.m. blaze razed stalls near Lamu Road in Pumwani Majengo. That fire destroyed dozens of businesses, leaving traders devastated.
Calls for Accountability and Action
Residents are now demanding answers. Many blame poor infrastructure, lack of fire hydrants, and delayed maintenance of electrical lines.
“We need proper planning. These fires are not accidents—they’re signs of neglect,” said a local youth leader.
As families sleep in makeshift shelters, the emotional toll continues to mount. Children cry for lost toys, parents mourn destroyed memories, and the community pleads for lasting solutions.
“We can’t keep rebuilding from ashes. We need protection,” one mother cried.
With fire outbreaks becoming alarmingly frequent, Pumwani residents are calling on Nairobi County to act—before another tragedy strikes.
