Huge Fire Erupts in Nairobi’s Tassia Estate, Families Flee Homes
A massive fire swept through Tassia Estate in Embakasi on Tuesday evening, August 26, reducing homes to ashes and forcing terrified families to flee.
Fire Starts in Informal Settlement
The blaze reportedly began in one of the iron-sheet houses before spreading rapidly to nearby structures. Early reports suggest a gas explosion could have triggered the inferno, but investigations are ongoing.
Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident and deployed rescue teams alongside Nairobi County firefighters.
“Our emergency teams are on the ground together with county fire services to contain the fire. No casualties reported so far,” the humanitarian organisation stated.
Locals Flee as Homes Burn
Witnesses described harrowing scenes as flames roared through wooden and iron-sheet structures. Residents tried desperately to put out the fire with buckets of water, but the blaze proved too powerful.
One resident said:
“We tried everything, but the fire spread too fast. We just ran for safety.”
Several hours later, the fire had already destroyed dozens of homes, leaving many families stranded with no belongings.

Tassia’s Troubling Fire History
Just a week earlier, on August 18, tragedy struck the same area. A seven-month-old baby died after a night inferno engulfed several homes.
At the time, neighbours tried to save lives, but they were hampered by what residents called a slow fire department response.
“We keep losing people and property. These fires are avoidable if authorities act on safety measures,” another resident lamented.
In March, yet another blaze in Kwa Kassim, Tassia, left six people badly injured and destroyed property of unknown value.
Growing Frustration
Tuesday’s fire reignited anger among residents who now accuse authorities of neglect. Locals argue that poor planning, lack of access roads, and delayed firefighting responses worsen the devastation.

Community leaders have urged both the national and county governments to address the recurring disasters before more lives are lost.
Meanwhile, affected families are now appealing for humanitarian aid. For many, the fire wiped out everything they owned, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
