Fire Erupts at Embakasi Girls: Students Watch Dorm Blaze as Red Cross Races to Contain Flames
Panic gripped Embakasi Girls Secondary School in Nairobi on Sunday, July 6, after a fire broke out in one of the dormitories. The incident, which occurred in the afternoon, saw students rush out of their hostels as thick smoke engulfed the sky.
According to a report by the Kenya Red Cross, emergency teams were already at the scene battling the blaze.
“Fire at Embakasi Girls’ School, Nairobi County. Efforts to contain it are underway,” the Red Cross confirmed in a post shared online.
The raging fire sent students and staff into a state of shock and confusion. Images shared widely on social media showed terrified learners standing helplessly as flames consumed their belongings.
Cause Still Unknown, No Casualties Reported
As of the time of publication, the exact cause of the fire remained unclear. Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities. Investigations have already begun to determine the source of the blaze.
Despite the magnitude of the fire, there were no injuries or fatalities reported. The timely evacuation by school authorities helped save lives.
“We are grateful no student was hurt,” a school staff member shared anonymously.
The fire is believed to have started in one of the dormitories, though officials have yet to release a full statement on the damage.

Many Kenyans expressed sympathy for the affected students, with some calling for increased safety measures in boarding schools.

“These repeated fires in schools are worrying. We need thorough inspections and fire drills,” wrote a concerned parent online.

Red Cross and Police on High Alert
The Kenya Red Cross, together with Nairobi County fire services, managed to contain the fire after hours of intense effort. The police have since sealed off the affected dormitory as they begin collecting evidence.
The Nairobi County Education Department has also been informed and is expected to issue a formal statement.
School Yet to Release Official Statement
By press time, the school administration had not yet released an official comment. However, sources confirmed that learning would be temporarily suspended for affected students as safety inspections are conducted.
The Embakasi fire comes barely weeks after increased calls for the Ministry of Education to enforce stricter boarding school safety protocols.
