Tears and Fury at Milimani Court as Elderly Women Demand Justice Over Grabbed Land
A heartbreaking scene unfolded at Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday, September 23, as elderly women from the Wilson Mitumba Women Group stormed the premises. Their cries pierced the air, demanding the return of their missing case file and justice for land they claim was stolen from them near Wilson Airport.
“We’ve Waited 20 Years!”—Women Cry for Justice
The women, some in tears and others chanting, were escorted out by police after the court postponed their hearing. The reason? Their case file had mysteriously vanished—again.

“We’ve waited 20 years. Where is our file?” one woman shouted. “We are tired of being ignored,” another added.
Land Commission Confirms Ownership, Yet Case Stalls
Despite setbacks, the women have received support. On April 15, the National Land Commission (NLC) confirmed that LR 209/14582 was legally registered to their group.

“The land belongs to Wilson Mitumba Women Group,” the NLC ruled.
However, in December 2024, the Nairobi Environment and Land Court ruled that their case overlapped with another, halting progress.
Parliament Steps In, But Questions Remain
Earlier this year, on March 26, the National Assembly Committee on Land met both parties. They discovered that the women had allocated some houses to police officers but lacked formal documentation.
“There were no minutes to define the terms of engagement,” the Committee noted.
The women explained that they received a lease certificate in 1990. In 1991, an Irish organization sponsored them to build homes. Their group formed out of desperation, having lived in carton shelters that couldn’t withstand rain or cold.

“We were poor. We lived in boxes. That land gave us dignity,” one woman said.
Public Outcry Grows as File Goes Missing Again
Kenyans online expressed outrage over the missing file and the women’s suffering.
“How can a file disappear for 20 years?” asked one user. “This is injustice. These women deserve answers,” another posted.
As the women continue their fight, their resilience shines through. But the question remains—will justice finally prevail?
