“Stop Misinforming Kenyans,” Ruto Fires Back at Salasya Over SHA
Mumias, Kakamega — President William Ruto has strongly criticized Mumias East MP Peter Salasya for opposing the government’s Social Health Authority (SHA) program. Speaking at an event to issue bonuses for sugarcane farmers, Ruto accused Salasya of spreading misinformation about the new health insurance scheme aimed at achieving universal health coverage (UHC).
Salasya’s Criticism Sparks Tensions
During the event, Salasya claimed the SHA was not as effective as the government portrayed. He alleged that dishonest individuals were misleading the President.
“Bwana rais, your people are not telling you the truth. They claim the SHA model is working, but it is not,” Salasya said. “You have a heart for Kenyans, but some cartels are using you to hinder progress.”
Salasya’s remarks drew a sharp rebuke from the Head of State.
Ruto’s Fiery Response
Ruto accused Salasya and other critics of opposing the SHA because they were paying more under the new scheme.
“The reason they complain about SHA is that they now pay more than before,” Ruto said. “Instead of admitting they don’t want to pay more, they claim wananchi have rejected it. Where have they met the people?”
Ruto explained the SHA’s fairness, highlighting that higher earners contribute more to support vulnerable Kenyans.

Ruto’s Personal Contribution
To demonstrate his commitment, Ruto revealed he pays Sh100,000 to SHA, up from Sh1,000 under the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). Meanwhile, MPs who previously paid Sh1,700 now contribute Sh27,000.
“This is why some people complain,” Ruto said. “We’ve said it’s better to pay more ourselves and avoid endless fundraisers.”
Support for Needy Kenyans
The President encouraged Kenyans to register for the SHA, reassuring them that the government would assist those unable to pay. He emphasized that the new scheme aims to ensure equitable healthcare access for all citizens.
Housing Agenda Sparks Reminder
Switching gears, Ruto reminded Salasya that the affordable housing project, which the MP had also criticized, was part of the Azimio manifesto.
“This was your coalition’s agenda, yet you criticize it now,” Ruto said, highlighting the need for unity in delivering development to Kenyans.
Bridging Divisions
Ruto’s speech reinforced his administration’s determination to implement UHC through the SHA program, despite resistance from some quarters. The President urged leaders to stop misleading citizens and focus on transformative initiatives that benefit all.
