South Korea to Help Kenya Address Youth Challenges With New Research

In a bold and timely move, the South Korean government is dispatching a team of top scholars to Kenya. Their mission? To investigate and understand the complex social, economic, psychological, and political issues affecting the youth in the country.

On Monday, July 14, the State Department of Youth Affairs and Creative Economy made the official announcement. The department said the upcoming survey would help both governments formulate effective solutions to the mounting challenges facing young people in Kenya today.

“The youth demographic is a challenge not only in Kenya but across the world, and the need to understand them is critical to inform appropriate policy interventions for their needs,” the statement read.

This major research initiative will be led by Professor Jeon Only, Director of the Africa Human Resource Development Centre at the Institute of African Studies, and Professor Bae Yuh Jin, Director of the Centre for African Culture and History—both from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) in South Korea.

“The University of Hankuk is among the four universities in Korea which have applied for research grants to the Korean government to research the Youth Development question in Africa,” the department revealed.

A Critical Time for Kenya’s Youth

The announcement couldn’t have come at a more urgent moment. Just days before, on July 7, massive youth-led protests erupted across the country during Saba Saba Day. Thousands of young Kenyans took to the streets in cities and towns, demanding economic justice, better leadership, and dignity.

Many of the protesters identified themselves as members of “Gen Z”—a generation that is increasingly vocal about governance and service delivery. Through social media and peaceful demonstrations, they’ve raised their voices against the high cost of living, unemployment, and state corruption.

Ruto Responds With Stern Warning

During a public event on Wednesday, July 9, President William Ruto addressed the ongoing unrest. While acknowledging the protests, he blamed unnamed individuals for “sponsoring chaos.”

“I have been quiet, and I have tolerated these people who want to change the government using unconstitutional means—but enough is enough,” the President declared firmly.

He went further to condemn any attacks on law enforcement, stressing the government’s readiness to take strong action.

“Anyone attacking our police officers, police stations, or installations is effectively declaring war. We will not tolerate it,” Ruto warned.
“We cannot run a country ruled by terror or chaos.”

Why This Research Matters

For many observers, the South Korean-led study offers a glimmer of hope. Understanding the deep-rooted frustrations and aspirations of Kenyan youth could be the first step toward long-lasting change.

Not only does this research symbolize international cooperation, but it also highlights a growing recognition: that the youth voice is powerful, valid, and urgent. While protests dominate headlines, it is research and policy that will shape the future.

And that future starts now.
