Ruto Fires Back at Standard Newspaper Over Headline Saying ‘Judas’ Betrayal’

President William Ruto has broken his silence following a headline by The Standard newspaper comparing his pact with Raila Odinga to Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus. The bold front-page splash ignited national debate, sparking accusations of betrayal from sections of the political divide. However, Ruto fired back with a passionate response, defending the unity deal as a blessing and not a curse.

Speaking during an Easter Sunday service in Ntulele, Narok County, the president described the unity pact as “divine and God-ordained.” He emphasized that peace and progress could only come from national unity, not division.

“The unity we are pushing in Kenya is divine and God-ordained. That is how we can be blessed as a nation—if we are united,” Ruto declared, drawing applause from the congregation.

Without naming The Standard directly, the president took a swipe at the newspaper’s controversial portrayal of the agreement. He accused certain media outlets of fueling discord.

“Those telling us through newspapers that unity is betrayal—how shameful and tragic,” he said with emotion in his voice. “While the bishop is telling us that nothing is impossible when we are united, the devil has a different message. May the devil be defeated.”

The newspaper in question caused a national stir after it ran a cover likening Ruto and Raila’s partnership to biblical betrayal. The headline claimed that the founding dream of Kenya had been “squandered at the altar of political expediency, impunity, and personal gain.” The cover went on to say: “Just as the biblical Eden was lost through defiance and betrayal, so too has Kenya’s dream of a just and prosperous nation been squandered by those entrusted to guard it.”

The unity pact between Ruto and Raila was signed in March 2025. It followed Raila’s failed bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship. The agreement outlines joint plans to implement the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, tackle youth unemployment, and uphold the two-thirds gender rule.

Additionally, both leaders pledged to promote inclusivity across political and religious lines. They believe this will open up public opportunities for all Kenyans.

Raila has since made it clear that his party is not joining the Kenya Kwanza government. Instead, he insists ODM is offering guidance to solve urgent national challenges.

As critics shout betrayal, the president remains firm. To him, unity is not a sin—it’s the nation’s only salvation.
