Russian Nationals in Kenya Urged to Register With Embassy Amid Airspace Closures
In a statement released on the evening of Monday, March 2, the embassy warned that the closure of airspace across several key transit countries—including the United Arab Emirates and Qatar United Arab Emirates —had significantly affected travel routes commonly used by Russian nationals.
“Due to the closure of airspace over Middle Eastern countries, including the UAE and Qatar, as a result of armed aggression by the USA and Israel against Iran, we urge Russian citizens who were unable to depart from Kenya to transit points to take several actions,” the embassy said.
The advisory outlined a series of precautionary measures aimed at assisting affected travellers. Among them, Russian citizens were urged to register with the embassy, report any travel-related challenges, and download the “Assistant Abroad” mobile application to receive real-time updates and support.
Additionally, travellers were advised to promptly inform their tour operators of any disruptions, including flight cancellations, to facilitate rebooking, refunds, or alternative arrangements. The embassy emphasised that those seeking compensation or itinerary changes should directly contact their respective airlines or ticketing agencies.
For passengers unable to secure immediate rebooking options, the embassy suggested exploring alternative transit routes through cities such as Addis Ababa, Cairo, or Istanbul, which remain operational despite ongoing regional instability.
The disruptions stem from heightened tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, which have led to increased security risks across the Persian Gulf region. As a result, multiple countries have imposed airspace restrictions, forcing airlines to suspend or reroute flights.

Industry reports indicate that more than 70 per cent of scheduled flights across affected routes have either been cancelled or delayed, with some airlines suspending operations indefinitely due to safety concerns.
In Kenya, the ripple effects have been felt at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where several Middle Eastern carriers have scaled down or halted operations. Airlines such as Emirates and Qatar Airways have reportedly grounded flights locally, leaving thousands of passengers stranded or seeking alternative travel arrangements.
This has effectively turned Nairobi into a temporary transit hub for affected travellers, as passengers from different nationalities await clarity on flight resumptions or seek new routes to their destinations.
The situation is further compounded by a broader wave of global airline suspensions. Major international carriers—including Lufthansa, Air India, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines—have temporarily halted flights to several Middle Eastern destinations, further limiting options for travellers.
Despite the disruptions, the Russian Embassy reassured its citizens that support mechanisms remain in place. It provided an emergency contact number, +254 728 606 541, urging nationals to use it strictly in life-threatening situations.
As geopolitical tensions continue to evolve, the advisory underscores growing concerns over the safety and reliability of international air travel routes passing through conflict-prone regions, with travellers urged to remain vigilant and flexible in their plans.
