Raila Odinga’s AU Bid Gains Momentum as Mauritius Withdraws Candidate
Raila Odinga’s campaign for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship has taken a dramatic turn. On November 26, Mauritius withdrew its candidate and announced full support for Raila’s bid.
Pauline Njoroge, a key figure in Raila’s campaign, revealed the news. She said Mauritius’ new Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, communicated the decision directly to President William Ruto.
“Mauritius, which had submitted a candidate for AUC chairmanship, will now support Raila Odinga’s bid,” Njoroge stated. “Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam shared this during a call with President Ruto.”
This move signals a strategic shift for Mauritius. Previously, former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth backed the now-withdrawn candidate. However, Ramgoolam’s election victory brought new priorities, aligning Mauritius’ foreign policy with Raila’s campaign.

Raila’s leadership ambitions have gathered support across Africa. In the past week alone, he visited seven West African nations. During these trips, he met presidents and shared his vision for a united and progressive Africa.
Njoroge emphasized the positive reception Raila has received. “Leaders and citizens have warmly embraced Raila’s dedication to Africa’s unity and development,” she said.
Raila’s West African tour ends on November 27 with a meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Nigeria’s support could provide a significant boost, given its influence in the continent.
The endorsement from Mauritius strengthens Raila’s campaign and highlights growing unity behind his vision for Africa. His supporters believe this could be a turning point in the race.

This recent development showcases Raila’s potential to unite African nations. It also underscores his commitment to fostering growth and development across the continent.
