John Waluke Criticises MPs for Applauding President Ruto, Likens Them to Schoolchildren
Sirisia MP John Waluke has blasted fellow lawmakers for giving President William Ruto a standing ovation. During the State of the Nation address on November 21, MPs applauded Ruto’s decision to cancel controversial Adani energy deals. However, Waluke found their reaction inappropriate
Waluke Said
“Kenyans were shocked,” Waluke said in the National Assembly on November 26. “This issue of Members of Parliament clapping like schoolchildren—even me—I don’t like it. There is a way of clapping without misbehaving like school kids. We are not supposed to behave that way.”
His remarks stirred emotions among lawmakers. Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris criticized his comparison, calling it an insult to children.

“I would like the Member of Parliament to withdraw the words ‘misbehave like schoolchildren,’” Passaris demanded. “Our schoolchildren do not behave badly. That statement is too generalized and unfairly stereotyping.”
Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba also disagreed with Waluke. He defended the MPs’ actions, calling them respectful and appropriate.
Why did Waluke complain about MPs behaviour?
Waluke’s controversial remarks have sparked discussions about Parliament’s conduct. Some critics argue that overly enthusiastic gestures toward the president undermine the decorum of the house. However, others view standing ovations as a normal expression of support for significant actions.
This incident reflects the increasing tension in Parliament over public perception and individual opinions. Whether Waluke’s comments will lead to stricter protocols in the house remains unclear.
