President Ruto to Address Tanzanian Parliament on May 5 in High-Level Visit

President William Ruto is set to deliver a special address to the Parliament of Tanzania on May 5, 2026, in a high-level diplomatic visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between the two neighbouring nations.

The announcement was confirmed by Tanzania’s National Assembly Deputy Speaker Daniel Sillo, who formally notified lawmakers during a parliamentary sitting on Wednesday, April 29. The address is scheduled to take place at 11am and is expected to attract significant attention from political leaders and regional observers.

“Honourable MPs, I would like to inform you that on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, His Excellency William Ruto, the President of the Republic of Kenya, will address this House. The event will also be a State of the Nation address,” Sillo told legislators, urging full attendance for the historic session.

The planned address has also been confirmed by a senior official at State House in Nairobi, underscoring its significance as part of ongoing diplomatic engagements between Kenya and Tanzania. It will mark one of the rare occasions a sitting Kenyan president addresses a foreign parliament within the East African region.

According to officials familiar with the visit, President Ruto is expected to outline key areas of cooperation between the two countries, including trade, infrastructure development, regional security, and economic integration under the East African Community framework.

“The address will focus on deepening cooperation and reinforcing the longstanding brotherhood between Kenya and Tanzania,” a senior government source indicated, highlighting the broader diplomatic agenda of the visit.

Kenya and Tanzania share one of the most strategic partnerships in East Africa, with strong ties in trade, tourism, and cross-border infrastructure. In recent years, both countries have taken steps to resolve long-standing trade disputes and improve the movement of goods and people across their borders.

Analysts note that President Ruto’s address comes at a time when the region is seeking to strengthen economic resilience amid global uncertainties, including supply chain disruptions and shifting geopolitical dynamics. The speech is expected to reaffirm Kenya’s commitment to regional integration and collaborative development.

The visit also carries symbolic weight, as it reflects renewed efforts by both governments to foster unity and shared prosperity within the region. “This engagement signals a new chapter in Kenya-Tanzania relations, anchored on mutual respect and shared economic goals,” a regional affairs expert observed.

During the address, President Ruto is likely to highlight joint infrastructure projects, including transport corridors and energy partnerships, which are seen as critical drivers of economic growth. There is also anticipation that he may touch on issues of regional peace and security, particularly in light of emerging challenges across the continent.

Tanzanian lawmakers are expected to use the session to engage with the Kenyan leader’s vision for regional cooperation, with the address providing a platform for strengthening parliamentary diplomacy between the two nations.

The high-profile visit comes as Kenya continues to position itself as a key player in regional and continental affairs, leveraging its diplomatic engagements to advance economic and political interests.

For Tanzania, hosting the Kenyan Head of State offers an opportunity to reinforce its role within the East African bloc while showcasing its commitment to fostering strong bilateral relationships.

As preparations for the May 5 address gather pace, attention will be firmly fixed on the key messages President Ruto will deliver and the potential outcomes of this diplomatic engagement.

“This is not just a ceremonial address, but a strategic moment to align priorities and chart a shared future for our two nations,” the State House official added.

The address is expected to set the tone for future engagements between Kenya and Tanzania, with both sides keen to translate diplomatic goodwill into tangible economic and social benefits for their citizens.
