NTSA Appoints Nashon Kondiwa as New Director General
In a notice issued on Wednesday, February 18, the Authority confirmed that Kondiwa’s contract will run for a period of three years, effective February 17, following consultations between the NTSA Board of Directors and the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir.
“The NTSA Board of Directors, in consultation with the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Roads and Transport, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Nashon Kondiwa as the Director General of the National Transport and Safety Authority for a term of three years,” the notice read.

Leadership transition at NTSA
Kondiwa takes over from Angela Wanjira, who has been serving in an acting capacity since November 2025 following the departure of former Director General George Njao. Njao exited the Authority after completing his tenure, having served the maximum two terms permitted under the law.
The appointment marks a significant leadership transition for the Authority at a time when road safety and digital reforms remain high on the government’s transport agenda.
NTSA, established to regulate road transport and promote safety on Kenyan roads, has in recent years intensified enforcement campaigns, digitised key services, and rolled out reforms targeting driver licensing, vehicle inspection, and public service vehicle compliance.
Digital transformation background
Before his elevation to Director General, Kondiwa served as NTSA’s Deputy Director for Information Communication Technology (ICT) from April 2021. During that period, he spearheaded the Authority’s digital transformation agenda, overseeing the enhancement of online service delivery platforms and integration of intelligent transport systems.
According to the Authority, Kondiwa brings over 22 years of experience in ICT, innovation, public sector leadership, and digital transformation within the transport sector.

A senior official familiar with the appointment described him as a technocrat with institutional memory and operational insight.
“Mr Kondiwa has been instrumental in modernising NTSA’s digital infrastructure. His appointment ensures continuity in reforms that leverage technology to enhance efficiency and transparency,” the official said.
Mandate and expectations
In his new role, Kondiwa will provide strategic leadership to implement NTSA’s statutory mandate of managing road transport and enhancing safety standards across the country. He will also serve as the Authority’s chief executive officer and secretary to the Board.
The position carries the responsibility of coordinating road safety policies, overseeing enforcement frameworks, and collaborating with other state agencies to address persistent challenges such as road traffic accidents, non-compliance among public service vehicles, and the integration of smart transport systems.
Kenya continues to grapple with road safety concerns, with stakeholders calling for stronger enforcement, public awareness, and data-driven interventions to reduce fatalities and injuries.
Transport analysts note that leadership stability at NTSA is critical in sustaining ongoing reforms.
“The Director General’s office plays a central role in aligning policy, enforcement, and technology. Continuity in leadership is essential to maintaining momentum in road safety initiatives,” a transport sector expert observed.
Looking ahead
Kondiwa’s appointment comes at a time when the Ministry of Roads and Transport is prioritising infrastructure expansion and regulatory efficiency as part of broader economic growth strategies.
As he assumes office, attention will likely focus on how NTSA advances its digital agenda, strengthens compliance mechanisms, and collaborates with counties and law enforcement agencies to enhance road safety outcomes.
For now, the Authority has expressed confidence in its new Director General’s capacity to steer the institution forward.
“We are confident that Mr Kondiwa will provide the strategic leadership required to deliver on NTSA’s mandate and improve service delivery to Kenyans,” the Board stated.
