NTSA Gives 21 Days for Govt Vehicles to Switch to Reflective Plates
Kenya’s national and county government vehicles have just three weeks to meet a major safety compliance order.
Countdown to August 29 Deadline
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a strict 21-day ultimatum to all government agencies to install new reflective number plates.
In a notice dated Thursday, August 7, NTSA warned that the directive must be fulfilled by August 29, 2025.
“Ensure all county and national government vehicles are fitted with the new generation number plates by August 29, 2025,”
read part of the statement.
Failure to meet the deadline could see non-compliant vehicles barred from operations.
Help Available for Application Challenges
NTSA urged ministries and county departments to reach out through official communication channels if they encounter any problems.

This directive comes just months after NTSA released a detailed guide for applying for the second-generation plates on May 21.
Step-by-Step Application Process
Government entities must apply through the NTSA TIMS portal using eCitizen or personal NTSA credentials.
- Log in and select “Vehicle Registration”.
- Click “Apply for Reflective Plate”.
- Select vehicle type and click Next.
- Choose “New Generation Plate” as the reason.
- Upload PDF documents – including logbook and clear front/rear plate images.
- Select plate shape – either square or oblong.
- Pick notification method (SMS preferred).
- Choose collection location from approved NTSA centres.
- Enter ID number of the collection person.
- Pay Ksh3,050 through the portal’s payment system.
An SMS notification will confirm when and where the plates can be collected.
Why the Push for Reflective Plates?
NTSA says the new plates are designed to boost road safety, combat vehicle-related crime, and improve law enforcement efficiency.
The reflective technology makes plates visible at night and allows authorities to easily identify vehicles through automated systems.
“This is about safety, security, and modernization of our road transport system,”
said an NTSA official familiar with the program.
