NPS Dismisses DCI Boss Mohammed Amin’s Exit Today, Hits Back at Daily Nation

The National Police Service (NPS) has firmly dismissed reports suggesting that the tenure of the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mohammed Amin, comes to an end today, terming the claims inaccurate and misleading.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga rejected media reports that had indicated Amin’s term would lapse on April 1. The clarification follows widespread circulation of the claims across various media platforms, including a headline published by the Daily Nation.

“The claim that Mr Amin’s tenure ‘ends today’ is factually inaccurate, premature, speculative, and misleading,” Nyaga stated.

He further affirmed that the DCI boss remains lawfully in office and continues to execute his duties without interruption.

“Mohammed Amin continues to serve in office lawfully and is discharging his duties diligently in service to the country,” he added.

The response marks a direct rebuttal to the Daily Nation’s report, which had suggested that Amin’s tenure was ending amid ongoing scrutiny over alleged abduction cases. The NPS criticized the publication, describing its headline as reckless and lacking substantiation.

According to the police service, matters concerning the appointment and tenure of senior security officials are governed strictly by legal frameworks and established procedures, and cannot be determined or announced by media outlets.

“No newspaper, however influential, has the power to declare the end of a public officer’s tenure,” the statement emphasized.

The NPS also took issue with the portrayal of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in relation to cases of alleged abductions and missing persons, arguing that such narratives risk undermining public trust in law enforcement institutions.

Nyaga noted that the DCI has consistently handled reports of abductions and disappearances with seriousness, conducting thorough and transparent investigations in each case. He added that in some instances, investigations had revealed that certain reported abductions were staged.

The spokesperson underscored that genuine cases have been pursued comprehensively, with the aim of ensuring justice and accountability.

“Painting the DCI with a broad brush of ‘abductions’ ignores the Directorate’s significant achievements under Mr Amin’s leadership,” Nyaga said.

He went on to highlight key milestones achieved during Amin’s tenure, including the strengthening of forensic capabilities, the dismantling of major criminal networks, and enhanced international cooperation. Among these achievements, the NPS cited Amin’s recent election to a key position within the INTERPOL as evidence of growing global recognition.

The statement further pointed to the DCI’s ongoing efforts in tackling serious crimes affecting ordinary citizens, describing the directorate as committed to upholding professionalism and integrity in its operations.

The controversy arises at a time when security agencies are under increased public scrutiny, particularly over issues related to human rights and accountability. Analysts note that such media reports, if unverified, can contribute to uncertainty within both the public and institutional spheres.

While the Daily Nation article has sparked debate, the NPS maintains that any decisions regarding leadership changes within the service will be communicated through official and lawful channels.
