NPS Announces Road Closures & Traffic Disruptions from 6am Ahead of CHAN Final in Kasarani

Motorists in Nairobi have been urged to prepare for major traffic disruptions ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) final on Saturday, August 30.

In a notice on Friday, August 29, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that road closures would begin at 6am. The affected roads include the busy Nairobi CBDand its surrounding areas.

Police stressed that the measures were necessary to ensure safety as thousands of fans travel to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

“We urge all motorists to cooperate with on-site officers to ensure smooth traffic flow,” NPS stated.

Diversions and Closures Announced

The Thika Superhighway will be the most affected route. For motorists coming from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru heading to Nairobi CBD, police advised them to use the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road.

A roadblock will also be mounted at Ruiru Interchange.

“Those coming from Githurai to the CBD should use the Githurai 44 route and Kiambu Road,” the statement added.

For fans heading to the stadium from Nairobi CBD without official vehicle passes, access will only be possible through service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.

Strict Enforcement on Match Day

NPS further confirmed that additional officers had been deployed to enforce the new rules.

“Action will be taken against anyone violating traffic regulations,” police warned.

The agency assured motorists that it was working with relevant agencies to minimize delays and enhance security.

High Stakes at Kasarani

The CHAN final promises to be historic. Morocco will be eyeing a record-extending third CHAN crown, while Madagascar will be seeking a fairytale first-ever championship.

On the other hand, Madagascar stunned Kenya in the quarters with a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win. They then defeated Sudan 1-0 in extra time to book their place in the final.

Fans Advised to Arrive Early

Organizers have planned a colorful closing ceremony before kickoff. Spectators have been urged to arrive at the stadium at least three hours before the game.
