Ruto Warns Harambee Stars Players Against Trading Affordable Houses

President William Ruto has fulfilled his pledge to reward Harambee Stars players with affordable housing units. This comes even after the team’s early exit from the CHAN tournament at the quarterfinal stage.

Speaking at State House during a luncheon on Thursday, the Head of State confirmed that the government would meet half the cost of the promised houses.

“The two-bedroom house that we have agreed on in affordable housing costs Ksh2 million. We are going to pay for you half that amount, which is Ksh1 million,” Ruto explained.

He stressed that the government’s goal was not just to reward the team but to secure their long-term financial well-being.

Flexible Payment Options

The President further revealed that players would not be required to pay the entire balance upfront.

“Alternatively, we will be giving you a mortgage which you can pay for over 20 years, and that would translate to a payment of Ksh2,000 or Ksh3,000 every month,” he said.

Ruto assured the players that the offer included flexibility, allowing them to choose houses in towns of their preference.

No Cash Rewards

However, the Head of State issued a stern warning against attempts to convert the housing reward into money.

“There is no room for exchanging the house for money. There is only the house, and you will get a chance to choose a house in a town of your choice, be it Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, or wherever you want,” Ruto insisted.

The President reminded the players that the scheme was about ownership and empowerment, not quick financial gains.

Not a Free Handout

Ruto also dismissed claims that the housing units amounted to government handouts. He clarified that players still had a responsibility to meet part of the cost.

“This is not a free gift. You will pay something small, but we are here to reduce the burden and give you dignity,” he said.

By emphasizing ownership, the Head of State maintained that the move was designed to help players build lasting assets rather than rely on temporary cash rewards.

A Step Towards Empowerment

The announcement sparked excitement among players and fans. Many praised the government’s approach, saying it would prevent athletes from falling into financial struggles after retirement.

For the Harambee Stars, the homes now represent both recognition and a foundation for the future.
