Nairobi to Install New Fiber Litter Bins in CBD Amid Rampant Scrap Metal Vandalism
Nairobi County has moved to curb vandalism in the city’s Central Business District (CBD) with a new plan. The county government is now replacing metallic litter bins with fiber-made alternatives after a surge in theft and destruction.
“We are continuing with the installation of dustbins in the CBD, but now we are installing dustbins which are more fibre. Which means even if they steal, it will not help them even if they go and steal them,” Mosiria stated.
Appeal to City Residents
Mosiria urged residents to take responsibility for protecting public facilities. He appealed to the public to use the new bins correctly and discourage theft.

“We will continue to install these new litter bins in the CBD. I would like the residents of the CBD to ensure that they take care of these bins. Please do not steal, and if you see anyone stealing them, please tell them to stop,” he added.
Warning to Vandals
The county has also intensified its crackdown on vandals and scrap metal dealers purchasing stolen bins. According to Mosiria, perpetrators will face immediate arrest and prosecution. He insisted that the destruction of public property would no longer be tolerated.
“It is unfortunate that after we reinstalled dustbins in the CBD, some individuals have resorted to vandalising them and stealing parts of these public facilities. As the County Government, we will not tolerate such acts,” Mosiria warned.
Cash Rewards for Whistleblowers
In a bold move, Mosiria introduced financial incentives for residents who expose vandals and rogue dealers. Just days earlier, he announced a Ksh10,000 reward for those who report scrap metal traders purchasing stolen bins.
This comes on top of an earlier Ksh5,000 pledge for tip-offs about individuals vandalizing or stealing county bins. Mosiria clarified that these funds would come from his personal pocket, not taxpayer money.
“For those scrap metal buyers who are buying bins that belong to the county government, we are coming for you. The Ksh5,000 offer for anyone who reports people who vandalise and sell dustbins is still there. But for those who will spot scrap metals with these bins, I will give them Ksh10,000,” Mosiria said.
