Ruto Criticizes Judge After Ruling Blocking Police Roadblocks in Nairobi CBD

President William Ruto has launched a fierce attack on the High Court after Justice Lawrence Mugambi issued a ruling blocking the erection of police roadblocks in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

During a heated address on Wednesday, Ruto Criticizes Judge After Ruling Blocking Police Roadblocks in Nairobi CBD The ruling had labelled police action on Monday, July 7, as a violation of Kenyans’ constitutional rights.

“I have seen orders at the court barring the Inspector General of Police from setting up roadblocks and the use of teargas,”
“The person who issued this directive is protected by the police. He has bodyguards who are police officers at home. He is driven by a trained officer, yet he says police should not protect the property of Kenyans,” said the Head of State.

The High Court decision followed a petition by the Katiba Institute. The petition accused the police of infringing on the freedom of movement, assembly, and protest by restricting access to the city centre.

Justice Mugambi directed the immediate removal of all roadblocks and barbed wire preventing public access to the CBD, except around essential protected areas. The ruling was widely applauded by civil rights groups.

Despite this, Ruto maintained that the roadblocks served a critical role in preserving peace during a volatile time.

“There is a reason why there is a roadblock. There is a reason why police have tear gas. They are supposed to be used to protect the lives of Kenyans when they are in danger,” he asserted.

He went further, accusing unnamed political figures of inciting chaos and attempting to destabilize the government.

“I hear they say they want to use unconstitutional methods to remove me from office before 2027,”
“I want to dare them—they will see the full force of the law,” Ruto declared

His remarks came amid ongoing protests that have rocked the nation, often erupting into violent clashes between demonstrators and the police. The president painted a grim picture of a plot to topple his government.

“This is a democratic nation, and Kenyans will decide the leadership of this country through the ballot,” he said.
“We cannot change the regime through violence. That is not going to happen in this country.”

His statements have sparked fierce debate across the country, with Kenyans divided on whether the court or the executive has overstepped its mandate.
