Murkomen Promises Promotions and Reintegration for Haiti Mission Officers Amid Tragic Loss

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that Kenyan police officers deployed in Haiti will be reintegrated and considered for promotion once they return. His remarks came during a press briefing on Thursday, September 25, just hours after the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the death of Officer Benedict Kabiru, who went missing during the mission six months ago.

“They Will Come Back Stronger”—Murkomen Praises Officers’ Sacrifice

Murkomen hailed the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) in Haiti as a major success. He emphasized that the officers had helped the Haitian government reclaim vital infrastructure from criminal gangs.

“If there’s something I’m looking forward to, it’s seeing our officers return,” Murkomen said. “They will use their experience to improve our police operations,” he added.

He specifically praised junior officers leading teams in Haiti, hinting at promotions for those who demonstrated leadership and resilience.

“They’ve gained much experience. I’m sure they’ll rise in ranks and become leaders,” he stated.

Kenya’s Global Role Highlighted Through Haiti Mission

Murkomen credited President William Ruto’s leadership for Kenya’s involvement in Haiti. He said the mission showcased Kenya’s commitment to global peace and humanitarian efforts.

“We’ve shown it’s possible to liberate Haiti from gangs,” Murkomen declared. “This was a conscious decision by our government,” he added.

He also noted that Kenya’s reputation for peacekeeping continues to grow, citing similarities between Kenya’s flag and those of Namibia and South Sudan.

“That’s because of the work we’ve done in those missions,” Murkomen explained. “We continue receiving international support,” he said.

Tragic Loss of Officer Benedict Kabiru Confirmed

The announcement came shortly after NPS confirmed the death of Officer Benedict Kabiru. He had gone missing on March 25 following an ambush in the Pont-Sonde area of Haiti’s Artibonite Department.

“The officer had been reported missing while on duty,” NPS stated. “In a tragic turn of events, we received confirmation of his death,” the statement added.

NPS assured the public that Kabiru’s family had been kept informed throughout the search.

New Framework Expected After UN Session

Murkomen revealed that the government expects a new robust framework to guide future missions. He believes this will enhance effectiveness and ensure better coordination.

“Sometimes, we need to celebrate ourselves,” Murkomen said. “Kenya is known for humanity. Let’s embrace that,” he concluded.
