Mudavadi Defends Ruto’s Ksh300M US Lobbying Deal, Cites Benefits for Nairobi
Kenya has strongly defended its decision to hire a United States lobbying firm at a staggering cost of Ksh300 million.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi dismissed allegations of corruption, secrecy, and wasteful spending, insisting the deal will directly benefit Kenyans.
“The Government of the Republic of Kenya takes serious note of the misleading allegations published by a section of Kenyan media about Kenya’s engagement of a US-based public affairs and lobbying firm,” Mudavadi stated.
He accused critics of spreading half-truths and misinformation.
“These reports are gravely inaccurate and lack a factual basis,” he added.
What the Deal Means for Kenya

The deal aims to preserve Kenya’s trade privileges, attract investors, counter negative perceptions of Ruto’s administration, and boost international partnerships.
“This move is about safeguarding national interests, strengthening bilateral relations, promoting tourism, and amplifying our voice on issues like climate finance and security,” he explained.
Transparency and Historical Context
The secrecy surrounding the deal had angered many Kenyans, especially after reports that taxpayer money was being used.
However, Mudavadi countered those concerns, pointing to its listing on the DOJ website.
“The presence of the details of the deal on the DOJ website is testament to the transparency of the agreement,” he argued.
He also reminded Kenyans that such deals were not new.
“All previous governments in Kenya since 1964, including Mzee Kenyatta, Moi, Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta, have engaged lobbyists in the US and UK,” Mudavadi noted.
According to him, 17 countries currently maintain similar contracts, spending over Ksh2.7 billion collectively.
Why This Matters Now
The contract comes at a time when Kenya faces diplomatic balancing between the US and China, while also grappling with an image crisis abroad.

Mudavadi maintained that the lobbying is not wasteful, but an investment in Kenya’s future.
“This engagement will guarantee Kenya better trade deals in the post-AGOA era and strengthen our standing globally,” he concluded.
