Why Matiang’i? Elders Explain Their Decision
The leaders praised Matiang’i’s commitment, competence, and transformational leadership. They highlighted his tenure in key ministries, which they believe prepared him to lead the nation.
“His unmatched performance in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, across multiple key ministries, showcased his dedication, competence, and vision for a better Kenya,” they stated.

They specifically noted his role in the Ministry of ICT, where he spearheaded reforms that expanded digital access. “One of his most remarkable achievements was the grand digital migration of Kenya’s media and several government services,” they added.
The endorsement comes amid growing political tension. Opposition leader Raila Odinga recently downplayed Matiang’i’s chances, urging him to reconsider his campaign strategy.
According to Raila, Matiang’i should avoid relying solely on ethnic and regional backing. He argued that presidential ambitions require national support, not just votes from his home region.
However, Kisii leaders quickly hit back, urging Raila to keep out of Matiang’i’s affairs. “We respect him, but if he doesn’t want to support Matiang’i, we kindly ask him to keep off and remain silent,” they declared.
Matiang’i’s endorsement has sparked a heated dispute between the Jubilee Party and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). Both parties claim him as their presidential candidate.
