Kioni Warns Opposition: “Mt Kenya Candidate Will Hand Ruto a Second Term”

Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has issued a stern warning to the opposition, urging them to tread carefully ahead of the 2027 elections. Speaking on Spice FM on Monday, September 29, Kioni cautioned that fielding a presidential candidate from Mt Kenya could backfire and hand President William Ruto a second term.

“We’re Repeating Mistakes”—Kioni Slams Opposition Strategy

Kioni criticized the opposition’s approach to selecting a flag bearer. He argued that leaving the decision to a few individuals would mirror the 2022 Azimio misstep.

“Some want six people to decide the flag bearer. I disagree,” Kioni said. “That will take us back to Azimio, where they chose without consulting Kenyans,” he added.

He believes that lack of broad consultation weakened the coalition and cost Raila Odinga and Martha Karua the presidency.

“Repeating that mistake will only please Ruto in State House,” Kioni warned.

“Mt Kenya Move Is Risky”—Kioni Predicts Political Fallout

Kioni further cautioned against presenting a candidate from the Mt Kenya region. He claimed such a move would split the vote and strengthen Ruto’s grip on the region.

“If we field a Mt Kenya candidate, we play straight into Ruto’s hands,” he said. “That’s what’s making Gachagua uncomfortable,” he added.

According to Kioni, Ruto is already working to divide the Mt Kenya voting bloc, which could secure him another 15 years in power.

“Matiang’i Deserves Better”—Jubilee Backs Former CS

The opposition’s internal cracks have seen former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i explore other options. Last week, he attended the Jubilee Party National Delegates Congress, sparking speculation about his presidential ambitions.

“Matiang’i has been unfairly treated in the opposition,” Kioni stated. “Jubilee decided to stand with him,” he added.

Sources suggest Matiang’i is among the top contenders for Jubilee’s presidential ticket.

“We’re Rebuilding”—Uhuru Vows Nationwide Revival

During the NDC, former President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that Jubilee will field candidates for all elective positions. He also revealed plans for a nationwide recruitment drive to strengthen grassroots support.

“We’re rebuilding Jubilee from the ground up,” Uhuru declared.

As the opposition scrambles for unity, Kioni’s warning adds urgency to the debate. The 2027 race is heating up—and every decision could shape Kenya’s future.
