Kenyans React as Uhuru Asks Gen Zs to Keep Criticising Ruto’s Govt: “Hakupewa Share Yake?”
Ngong – Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has ignited a storm of reactions after urging Kenyan youth to continue pushing for good governance. Speaking on Friday, January 17, during the requiem mass for his cousin Kibathi Muigai in Ngong, Uhuru passionately encouraged the youth not to shy away from demanding their rights.
“Don’t Just Sit Back, Fight for Your Rights”
Uhuru called on the youth to remain resilient, emphasizing the need to defend what is rightfully theirs. His message resonated as both a plea and a challenge to Gen Z.
“Fight for your rights, bwana,” he said. “Don’t just sit down and watch your properties being taken away after working hard for them. Fight for your rights.”
He further warned the youth against complacency, reminding them that failing to act now would lead to regret in the future.

“If you don’t fight for what is yours, don’t complain when it is taken away. Everything is worth fighting for,” he added.
Online Reactions: Praise, Questions, and Criticism
Uhuru’s remarks sparked a lively debate online, with many Kenyans sharing their perspectives.
One user, Chege, questioned Uhuru’s motives, suggesting, “Uhuru wasn’t given shares?” Others, like Hakeem Nassur, dismissed such notions, stating, “Uhuru isn’t for sale.”
Some applauded his boldness. 1964 commented, “My guy, well spoken,” while Marine added, “Things are boiling nicely.” Others speculated that his comments might be linked to delayed political appointments. Edwin Numbi suggested, “He was waiting for appointees to be sworn in.”
The phrase “Gen Z apana ogopa” (Gen Z, don’t be afraid) shared by Hon Joseph Lendrix, captured the heart of Uhuru’s message, rallying the youth to keep speaking out.
Government’s Tensions with Gen Z
Uhuru’s call comes at a time of heightened government scrutiny of social media platforms, often used by Gen Z to criticize leadership. The Ministry of Interior recently met with tech giants like Meta and X (formerly Twitter) to discuss stricter regulations to combat disinformation and online abuse.
Platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and X have been instrumental in organizing protests, including the resistance against the Finance Bill 2024. The government, faced with mass dissent, eventually abandoned the controversial tax-heavy proposal.
The Bigger Picture
Uhuru’s words highlight the power of youth movements and their ability to drive change. As the debate continues, the message to Kenya’s youth remains clear: stay bold, remain active, and fight for your future.
