Kenyan Fugitive Wanted in U.S. Over Fatal Drunk-Driving Conviction Faces Extradition
A Kenyan man wanted in the United States over a fatal drunk-driving conviction has been arrested in Nairobi nearly 13 years after he allegedly fled the country.
The suspect was arrested in Runda, Nairobi, on September 9, 2026, bringing to an end a search that began after he left the US in 2013.

Kenyan fugitive faces US extradition
According to court documents, the man was convicted in the United States of Gross Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated, an offence under Section 191.5(a) of the California Penal Code.
The conviction also contained three special allegations.
Court records indicate that the man was required to appear before the Superior Court of California, County of Madera, on October 28, 2013, for sentencing.
However, he failed to attend the scheduled court appearance.
His departure triggered efforts by US authorities to locate him and have him returned to the country to complete the legal process arising from his conviction.
US extradition request

Despite the request, the suspect remained outside US custody for several years.
The matter resurfaced in Kenya after the Milimani Chief Magistrate’s Court issued a warrant that eventually led to his arrest in Runda on September 9, 2026.
During the court session, the suspect requested to be released on bond while the case proceeds.
He offered to surrender his passport and comply with conditions that the court might impose.
However, the prosecution opposed the application, arguing that the suspect posed a flight risk.
The prosecution also relied on the pending extradition proceedings in opposing his release.
Court denies bond
After considering the application, the magistrate declined to release the suspect on bond.
The decision means the Kenyan fugitive will remain in custody while the court considers the request by US authorities.
The Kenyan court is expected to give further directions when the matter comes up for mention on September 15, 2026.

The case could determine the next steps in the US request and whether the suspect will eventually be surrendered to American authorities.
