Kenya Mourns Fred Odhiambo: Deputy Auditor General Dies at Karen Hospital

Kenya is in mourning following the sudden death of Fredrick Odhiambo, the Deputy Auditor-General in charge of Financial Audit Services. Odhiambo passed away on Thursday, October 2, at Karen Hospital. His illness remains undisclosed, but his legacy speaks volumes.

“It Can’t Be Like This”—Tributes Pour In for a National Icon

Fred Nyasoro expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

“We do so much for a life that can vanish in an instant,” he wrote. “CPA Fred Odhiambo wuod Nyakach, it can’t be like this Osiepwa,” he added.

Joe Gidi, a close friend and neighbor, also shared his grief.

“CPA Fred Odhiambo passed on today at Karen Hospital. RIP bro,” he posted.

“A Man of Integrity”—Odhiambo’s Career Shaped Kenya’s Financial Landscape

Appointed in 2020, Odhiambo led over 1,200 auditors at the Office of the Auditor-General (OAG). He oversaw audits for all 47 counties, 290 national entities, and hundreds of state corporations.

Under his leadership, the OAG adopted a risk-based, data-driven approach. This reduced fieldwork days by 25% and expanded audit coverage to 92% of public expenditure in the 2023/24 financial year.

Jarunda Jaluth Mambobiad recalled meeting him recently.

“Fred was a man of integrity, wisdom, and quiet strength,” he said. “His legacy will not be forgotten,” he added.

“Life Is Vanity”—Friends Struggle to Accept the Loss

Fcpa Hesbon Omollo shared his heartbreak.

“Struggling to come to terms with the sudden demise of my friend,” he wrote. “Death is a bad reaper,” he added.

Reuben Korir offered his condolences.

“May God comfort his family and friends,” he posted.

Odhiambo’s passing has left a void in Kenya’s governance and accountability space.

“A Mentor to Many”—Odhiambo’s Impact Went Beyond Numbers

Odhiambo was a CPA-K and certified fraud examiner. He led audits on COVID-19 funds, Eurobond proceeds, and major infrastructure projects. He chaired the AFROSAI-E working group on extractive industries and represented Kenya on INTOSAI’s global standards committee.

He mentored hundreds of public-sector accountants and inspired youth through ICPAK’s student chapter.

“He believed in building future leaders,” said a colleague. “His passion for mentorship was unmatched,” they added.

“Another Giant Falls”—Kenya Also Mourns Dalmas Otieno

Weeks earlier, Kenya lost former Rongo MP Dalmas Otieno. He died at his Nairobi home and was buried in Rongo on October 2.

As the nation grieves, Fred Odhiambo’s legacy remains etched in Kenya’s pursuit of transparency and integrity.
