Grief Turns to Rage: Kibera Residents March to Kilimani Over Mysterious Death of Domestic Worker
A wave of grief and fury swept through Nairobi on Wednesday afternoon as dozens of Kibera residents marched to Kilimani. Their mission was clear: demand justice for 54-year-old domestic worker Zaituni Kavaya, who died under suspicious circumstances while working in Kilimani.
“She Was One of Us”—Protesters Demand Accountability
The emotional protest began in Kibera and snaked through Yaya Center before reaching the apartment on Munga Road, where Kavaya reportedly fell to her death from the fifth floor.

“We have come here to protest the death of one of our own,” shouted a former domestic worker. “I’ve worked in eight countries. I never imagined this happening in Kenya,” she added.
Holding placards and twigs, the crowd stood outside the building, chanting and demanding answers.
Arrests Made, But Questions Remain
Hours before the protest, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested five Sudanese nationals linked to Kavaya’s death. They were taken to Kilimani Police Station for interrogation.

“We’re investigating all angles. No stone will be left unturned,” said a DCI officer at the scene.
Despite the arrests, locals remain unconvinced. Many believe Kavaya’s death was not accidental.
“This feels like a cover-up. We need the truth,” said a protester.
Daughter’s Painful Discovery
Faith Kavaya, the deceased’s daughter, recounted her heartbreak. She had tried calling her mother to bring her tea, but no one answered.
“I kept calling. No one picked up,” Faith said tearfully. “Then a police officer called and told me to go to Kilimani Station,” she added.
Upon arrival, she was informed her mother had died after falling from the fifth floor. She later identified her body at Nairobi City Mortuary.

“I couldn’t believe it. She was gone,” Faith whispered.
Court documents suggest the tragedy may have stemmed from a dispute over missing cash. However, the exact circumstances remain unclear.
Public Outcry Grows as Case Unfolds
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, especially among domestic workers who feel vulnerable and unprotected.
“This is what happens when workers have no rights,” said a human rights activist. “We demand justice, not silence,” she added.
As investigations continue, the community is united in grief—and determined to see justice served.
