Kenya Medical Association Issues Urgent Ebola Preparedness Alert as Regional Outbreak Raises Concern

The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) has issued an urgent Ebola preparedness advisory to healthcare workers across the country, warning that Kenya remains vulnerable to a potential outbreak as cases of the deadly virus continue to rise in neighboring countries.

The alert, released on Thursday, June 11, follows updated guidance from the Ministry of Health and comes amid growing concern over the spread of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in parts of East and Central Africa. Health authorities are now calling for heightened vigilance among doctors, nurses, clinical officers, and all frontline healthcare personnel.

The advisory urges health facilities nationwide to strengthen surveillance measures and maintain a high level of suspicion when handling patients presenting symptoms commonly associated with Ebola.

According to KMA, healthcare workers should carefully assess patients with fever and related symptoms while paying close attention to travel histories and possible contact with individuals arriving from affected regions.

“Do not wait for travel history confirmation or laboratory results before initiating isolation. Patients may not volunteer their history or may be too ill to provide it. ISOLATE FIRST. Investigate and initiate management after,” the advisory stated.

The association emphasized that immediate isolation remains one of the most effective ways of preventing the spread of the highly infectious disease within healthcare facilities and communities.

Under the new preparedness guidelines, health workers have been instructed to isolate any patient displaying symptoms consistent with Ebola upon arrival at medical facilities, even before test results are available.

Clinical signs identified for urgent isolation include sudden onset of fever, severe headaches, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, unexplained bleeding, bruising, and general weakness.

Medical experts warn that early symptoms of Ebola can closely resemble those of other common illnesses, making rapid identification and isolation crucial in preventing transmission.

While Kenya has not reported any confirmed Ebola cases, authorities remain concerned due to the country’s position as a regional transport and trade hub.

The KMA noted that Kenya’s extensive cross-border movement increases the risk of imported infections, particularly through major entry points such as Busia Border Post, Malaba Border Post, Suam Border Post, Namanga Border Post and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Health authorities have consequently intensified screening and surveillance activities at border crossings and airports to detect any suspected cases early.

The preparedness alert comes at a time when several counties are also strengthening emergency response measures. County governments have been reviewing isolation capacities, emergency response protocols, and public health awareness campaigns as part of broader preparedness efforts.

KMA has further instructed hospitals and health centers to immediately assess their readiness levels by ensuring the availability of isolation rooms, adequate stocks of personal protective equipment (PPE), and proper staff training on infection prevention and control procedures.

“Healthcare facilities must review their preparedness plans and ensure all infection prevention protocols are fully operational,” the association emphasized.

The Ebola outbreak currently affecting parts of the region has raised alarm among public health experts due to its high fatality rate and potential for rapid spread if not contained.

According to figures cited in the advisory, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has recorded 598 confirmed Ebola cases and 115 deaths. Meanwhile, Uganda has reported 19 confirmed cases and two deaths linked to the disease.

Public health specialists continue to stress that preparedness, early detection, rapid isolation, and community awareness remain the strongest defenses against a potential outbreak.

As regional health agencies intensify containment efforts, Kenyan authorities are urging healthcare workers and members of the public to remain vigilant while avoiding panic, emphasizing that no confirmed Ebola case has been reported in the country so far.

The latest advisory underscores Kenya’s commitment to maintaining a strong public health response and safeguarding the population against emerging infectious disease threats as regional surveillance efforts continue.
