NLC Launches Fresh Land Acquisition Exercise for Ksh9.42 Billion Illasit-Njukini-Taveta Road Project

The National Land Commission (NLC) has initiated a fresh compulsory land acquisition exercise affecting dozens of property owners in Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties as the government accelerates the construction of the strategic Illasit-Njukini-Taveta Road.

In a gazette notice published on June 12, 2026, the commission announced plans to acquire several parcels of land along the project corridor to pave the way for the implementation of the 66.5-kilometre road upgrade, a major infrastructure project expected to transform transport and trade in Kenya’s southern border region.

The notice, which also references an earlier acquisition process, calls on all individuals with ownership claims or interests in the identified parcels to appear before the commission for official inquiries and compensation assessment.

“The National Land Commission calls upon persons who have an interest or claim in the land shown in the schedule here below, which the Commission intends to compulsorily acquire for purposes of the Construction of Illasit-Njukini-Taveta Road Project, to appear before the Commission in person on the date and place shown,” the gazette notice stated.

According to the commission, more than 20 parcels of land covering approximately 3.1245 hectares have been earmarked for acquisition. The affected properties are located along the proposed road corridor that links Kajiado County to Taita Taveta County near the Kenya-Tanzania border.

Three-Day Inquiry Process Scheduled

The land acquisition process will involve a series of public inquiries aimed at verifying ownership, assessing compensation claims, and addressing any disputes related to the affected parcels.

The first hearing is scheduled to take place at the Rombo Chief’s Office on July 7, 2026, starting at 10:00 a.m. Additional sessions will be held at the Njukini Chief’s Office on July 8 and July 9.

NLC noted that several parcels listed in the notice are still marked as “To Be Determined” (TBD), indicating that ownership details are yet to be fully verified.

Property owners and interested parties have been directed to submit compensation claims before their scheduled hearing dates. Required documents include copies of national identification cards, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN certificates, title deeds or ownership documents, and bank account information for compensation processing.

The commission said claims can be submitted either at Ardhi House in Nairobi or through the Taita Taveta County Coordinator’s Office.

Road Project Expected to Transform Regional Connectivity

The acquisition exercise forms part of the larger Ksh9.42 billion Illasit-Njukini-Taveta Road Project being implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).

The project seeks to upgrade the road to bitumen standards, replacing a largely gravel surface that has long posed challenges to motorists, traders, and residents, especially during rainy seasons.

Once completed, the road is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Illasit and Taveta from approximately two hours to less than 45 minutes.

The project includes the construction of bridges, drainage systems, pedestrian facilities, and street lighting in major trading centres along the route.

Infrastructure experts believe the road will enhance regional trade by improving access to border points with Tanzania, boosting tourism, and facilitating the movement of agricultural produce from the region.

Government Intensifies Land Reforms

The latest acquisition exercise comes amid broader government efforts to address land ownership challenges and accelerate infrastructure development across the country.

Last month, President William Ruto announced plans to issue more than 200,000 title deeds to over one million families in the Coast region as part of efforts to tackle historical land injustices, squatter settlements, and landlessness.

As the Illasit-Njukini-Taveta Road Project gathers momentum, affected landowners are now preparing for compensation hearings that will determine the future of one of the region’s most ambitious infrastructure developments.

The road is expected to play a critical role in opening up economic opportunities, strengthening regional integration, and supporting long-term development goals in both Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties.
