KeNHA Announces 2-Month Partial Closure of Thika Road at Kihunguro, Sparks Mixed Reactions
Motorists using Thika Road should brace for major disruptions. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a two-month partial closure at Kihunguro, starting October 20 to December 20, 2025.
“We Wish to Notify the Public…”
In a public notice issued on Monday, KeNHA confirmed the closure will affect both Nairobi-bound and Thika-bound service lanes.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of Thika Superhighway (A2) Road at Kihunguro will experience traffic disruption along the Nairobi and Thika-bound service lanes from Monday, 20th October, 2025, to Saturday, 20th December, 2025,” the statement read.

“This Footbridge Is Long Overdue”
For years, Kihunguro has suffered from severe traffic jams. The infamous Zebra Crossing in the middle of Thika Road has worsened the situation, especially during rush hour.
“This footbridge is long overdue. We’ve waited for years,” said a frustrated commuter.
Pedestrians cross multiple lanes daily, risking their lives and causing delays. Traffic officers have often been deployed to manage the chaos.
“Only Up to Shell Station, Then Rejoin Highway”
“We urge motorists to follow the temporary signage and cooperate with traffic marshals,” KeNHA advised.
“We Factored in Delays and Complexity”

“We factored in practical considerations, including traffic flow and site challenges,” the statement added.
Despite the inconvenience, many residents welcomed the move, hoping it would finally ease congestion and improve safety.
“We’re tired of risking our lives just to cross the road,” said a local vendor.
“Let’s Be Patient and Stay Safe”

“Let’s be patient and stay safe. This project will benefit everyone,” KeNHA concluded.
