Junet Mohamed Laughs Off Kalonzo’s Decision To Reshuffle Azimio Leadership, Shares Old Meme

Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed has reacted with humour after being removed from a key leadership position within the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party in the National Assembly, following a major restructuring of the opposition alliance’s leadership.

The changes were confirmed in a statement issued by Kalonzo Musyoka, who recently assumed the role of coalition leader during a meeting of the coalition’s top governing organs. The meeting brought together members of the Coalition Council and the National Coalition Executive Council to deliberate on the alliance’s future direction as it reorganises ahead of the 2027 Kenyan General Election.

According to the statement, the meeting resolved to restructure leadership positions within the coalition, resulting in Junet’s removal from his role as leader of the Azimio Coalition Parliamentary Group in the National Assembly of Kenya.

“The meeting further resolved to terminate with immediate effect the appointment of Junet Mohamed as the Leader of the Azimio Coalition Parliamentary Group in the National Assembly and appointed Caroli Omondi to serve as the Leader of the Azimio Coalition Party Parliamentary Group with immediate effect,” Kalonzo said in the statement.

The reshuffle, according to coalition leaders, was part of a broader effort to reorganise the alliance after several members either assumed new government roles or became less active in the coalition’s decision-making structures.

Kalonzo explained that some individuals listed within the coalition’s leadership organs had effectively ceased participating in the coalition after accepting public appointments or aligning themselves with other political arrangements.

Among those identified as having ceased to be members of the Azimio Coalition Council were Ali Hassan Joho, nominated MP Sabina Chege, Abdi Noor Omar Farah, and Junet Mohamed.

The coalition also confirmed the removal of several individuals from the National Coalition Executive Council, including Wycliffe Oparanya, Adan Keynan, David Pkosing, Mishi Mboko, Abdul Haji, Opiyo Wandayi, Isabella Wangechi Githinji, Caroline Wanjiru Karugu, and Solomon Kuria.

Coalition officials indicated that new members would soon be appointed to fill the vacant positions as part of what they described as an expanded and restructured party leadership.

However, despite the significance of the changes, Junet appeared largely unfazed by the development.

Shortly after the announcement circulated online, the outspoken legislator took to his X (formerly Twitter) account and shared a popular meme dating back to 2016, signalling that he was taking the development in stride rather than confronting it publicly.

While he did not issue a lengthy statement regarding the reshuffle, the move was widely interpreted by political observers as a lighthearted response to what could otherwise have been a politically tense moment.

By choosing humour, Junet appeared to suggest that the leadership change was simply another episode in Kenya’s often turbulent political environment, where alliances and positions frequently shift.

The leadership reshuffle also follows a significant transition within Azimio after Uhuru Kenyatta chaired a National Executive Council meeting that formally endorsed Kalonzo Musyoka as the coalition’s new leader.

During the same session, Caroli Omondi was appointed Secretary General of the coalition, replacing Junet in a key administrative role.

The coalition said the meeting had been properly convened and confirmed by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, giving legal backing to the leadership decisions taken during the session.

Following his appointment, Kalonzo thanked member parties and coalition leaders for entrusting him with the responsibility of steering the opposition alliance as it reorganises and prepares for future political contests.

Political analysts say the latest developments reflect the evolving dynamics within the Azimio coalition as opposition leaders reposition themselves in the lead-up to the next general election cycle.
