Johanna Ng’eno to Be Buried on Friday as Requiem and Vigil Dates Confirmed

The family of the late Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament, Johanna Ng’eno, has confirmed that his burial will take place on Friday, March 6, following consultations between political leaders and relatives in Narok County.

The burial arrangements were agreed upon during a high-level meeting convened at the legislator’s rural home in the wake of a tragic helicopter crash that occurred on February 28 in Chepkiep, Mosop Constituency, Nandi County. The accident claimed multiple lives, sending shockwaves across the political and local community.

According to the official programme released by the family, a requiem mass will be held on Wednesday, March 4, at the Nairobi Baptist Church, providing an opportunity for national leaders, colleagues, and members of the public to pay their last respects in the capital.

A night vigil is scheduled for Thursday, March 5, in line with traditional rites observed by the Kipsigis community. The vigil is expected to bring together family members, community elders, and leaders in honour of the deceased and others who perished in the crash.

Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, who is also the father-in-law of the late MP, confirmed that both Ng’eno’s body and that of Wycliffe Kiprotich Rono will spend the night at his residence. This arrangement, he noted, is in accordance with Kipsigis customs, as the two were married.

The governor further indicated that the remaining four victims—who were unmarried—will also be brought to Ng’eno’s home ahead of the burial ceremonies, in keeping with cultural traditions and family wishes.

On Friday, a joint memorial service will be held at Emurua Dikirr Primary School, where thousands of mourners are expected to gather. Thereafter, the bodies will be transported to their respective homes for separate interments later the same day.

President William Ruto visited the bereaved family at their Karen residence in Nairobi on March 2, where he offered his condolences and paid tribute to the late legislator.

“Mr N’geno did his best. He contributed to the welfare of the community, the nation and humanity,” the President said, describing Ng’eno as a dedicated, hardworking, and progressive leader.

The Head of State further highlighted Ng’eno’s role in advancing the government’s development agenda, particularly in his capacity as chair of the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works. He credited the late MP with supporting the implementation of the Affordable Housing Programme.

Meanwhile, Governor Ntutu extended an open invitation to political leaders across the country to attend the burial ceremony but cautioned against turning the solemn occasion into a political platform.

“All leaders are welcome to attend, but we urge them to refrain from spreading propaganda or engaging in politics during the funeral,” Ntutu stated.

Leaders present during the consultative meeting included Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok, Narok Woman Representative Rebecca Tonkei, Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli, and Chepalungu MP Victor Koech.

As preparations continue, leaders and residents alike have called for unity and respect during the mourning period, as the country prepares to bid farewell to a legislator widely remembered for his service and commitment to his constituents.
