Injuries Reported as Violent Clashes Erupt Over Land Dispute in Muhoroni Border

Several people are feared dead and dozens injured after violent clashes broke out between rival communities along the Muhoroni border on Sunday, March 15, in a conflict linked to a long-running land and boundary dispute.

Witnesses said the confrontation escalated rapidly as groups armed with crude weapons fought over grazing land, triggering panic, destruction of property, and fears of multiple casualties in the volatile border region between Kisumu County and Kericho County.

Muhoroni Sub-County Police Commander Frederick Ombaka confirmed the incident, saying security agencies had been deployed to restore calm and assess the scale of the violence.

“Three people were shot with arrows during the clashes, and one individual is reported missing,” Ombaka said, adding that investigations were ongoing.

Authorities also reported that several motor vehicles were set ablaze during the unrest, while angry residents barricaded the busy Muhoroni–Londiani junction for hours, paralysing transport across the corridor.

During the chaos, rioters reportedly torched sections of nearby sugarcane plantations and destroyed a tractor belonging to a local sugar company, further escalating tensions and economic losses in the area.

Motorists were forced to seek alternative routes, with officials advising drivers to use the longer Londiani–Kericho–Kisumu road via Mau Summit, Chepsir, and Kericho town to avoid the conflict zone.

By the time of publication, security teams had recovered one body from the scene in what officials described as a severely burnt condition, though the exact death toll remained unclear.

Residents said fear gripped surrounding villages as families fled their homes amid concerns that retaliatory attacks could occur overnight.

Border conflicts in the Muhoroni region are not new, though they had subsided in recent years following sustained peace efforts involving community elders, political leaders, and security agencies.

A key driver of the disputes is disagreement over the precise location of the approximately 103-kilometre boundary separating the two counties, with both sides asserting historical claims to sections of the land.

Competition for fertile farmland and access to grazing areas has further inflamed tensions, particularly during dry seasons when resources become scarce.

Incidents of cattle rustling have also been cited as recurring triggers for violence, often spiralling into broader communal clashes that result in displacement and loss of livelihoods.

In March 2025, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and Kericho Governor Erick Mutai declared the border dispute largely resolved after joint peace initiatives supported by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

However, Sunday’s violence suggests that underlying tensions remain unresolved, raising concerns about the sustainability of previous peace agreements.

The Muhoroni conflict mirrors similar incidents in the nearby Sondu area, another hotspot along the county boundary where disputes over land, cattle, and administrative control have periodically erupted into violence.

Security officials say additional police units have been deployed to prevent further escalation and to reassure residents, while local leaders are expected to convene emergency meetings aimed at calming tensions.

Humanitarian organisations are also assessing the situation, particularly the needs of families displaced by the violence.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading inflammatory information, warning that perpetrators of violence or destruction of property will face legal consequences.

For now, uncertainty hangs over the region as investigations continue and communities brace for possible aftershocks of the clashes.

“Security agencies are on the ground to restore order and ensure the safety of all residents,” Ombaka assured.

The incident underscores the fragile nature of peace in border regions where historical grievances, land pressures, and resource competition continue to pose risks to stability and development.
