Ida Odinga Rejects Calls to Join Politics Ahead of 2027 Elections
Speaking to the press on Monday, April 13, the Kenyan Ambassador and Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme addressed persistent rumours suggesting she could be preparing a political bid. She made it clear that she has no intention of contesting for any seat, emphasising that her focus remains on diplomacy and professional engagements.
“Personally, I am not a politician. My husband was, my daughter is; my brother-in-law is also a politician; people around me are, but I am an industrialist and not a politician,” Ida stated, drawing a clear distinction between her career path and that of her politically active family members.
Her remarks come at a time of heightened political activity in Kenya, with early alignments and succession debates already shaping conversations ahead of the 2027 polls. The Odinga family, long considered a central force in the country’s political landscape, has remained a focal point of these discussions.

“Just as we said, I have been silent for some time. When I lost my husband, Honourable Raila Odinga, I was still in the state of mourning, which was very important to me,” she explained. “Therefore, I was not able to come out and participate in any political arrangement that you people are talking about,” she added.
Her clarification appears aimed at dispelling narratives that her silence signalled political recalibration or preparation for a future candidacy. Instead, she reiterated her commitment to her current diplomatic responsibilities and professional identity.
Her stance contrasts with that of other members of the Odinga family who continue to play active roles in politics. Her daughter, Winnie Odinga, has in recent years increased her political visibility and is widely seen as positioning herself for a more prominent role within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Similarly, her brother-in-law, Oburu Oginga, remains an influential figure in the political arena, reinforcing the family’s enduring presence in national affairs.

Observers note that Ida Odinga’s decision to remain outside elective politics could help maintain a balance within the family’s public image, allowing her to continue engaging in non-partisan roles at both national and international levels.
Political analysts also suggest that her clarification may help quell speculation that has intensified in recent weeks as various political actors begin to position themselves ahead of the next general election cycle.
Despite stepping away from direct political participation, Ida Odinga’s influence remains significant, particularly through her diplomatic work and longstanding involvement in social and development initiatives.

Her message was clear and unequivocal: “I am not a politician,” she reiterated, signalling that her future will remain anchored in service beyond the ballot.
