Two Killed as Demonstrations Erupt in Mbeere North
The fatalities occurred after a group of youths took to the streets to protest the deteriorating condition of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital, a key public health facility that has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks. Residents have repeatedly raised alarm over what they describe as dilapidated infrastructure and declining service delivery at the hospital.
According to witnesses, the protests began peacefully in the morning but escalated as demonstrators blocked sections of the busy Embu Highway using rocks and debris, bringing traffic to a standstill for several hours. The situation reportedly deteriorated in the afternoon when police officers moved in to disperse the crowd.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that tensions flared when protesters resisted police efforts to clear the road, leading to a confrontation that quickly turned chaotic. Reports suggest that officers fired live ammunition during the clash, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.
Local residents described scenes of panic and confusion as the standoff intensified. “Things escalated very fast. We saw police confronting the youths, and then suddenly there were gunshots. People started running in all directions,” said one witness who requested anonymity due to security concerns.
The protests were largely driven by growing frustration over the state of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital, which serves as a primary healthcare facility for the surrounding population. In recent weeks, images circulating on social media have highlighted structural damage at the hospital, including leaking and partially collapsed roofs in some wards.
Community leaders and ward representatives have previously warned that the situation at the facility is unsustainable, calling on county authorities to prioritise urgent upgrades. “This hospital is critical to the community, yet its condition continues to deteriorate. Residents feel neglected and are demanding accountability,” a local official noted during earlier engagements.
The latest unrest underscores the depth of public dissatisfaction, particularly in areas where access to quality healthcare remains limited. Residents say the facility’s decline has forced many to seek medical services elsewhere, often at higher costs.
Tuesday’s incident marks the second fatal confrontation involving protesters and police this month. Earlier in April, two individuals were shot dead in Siaya County during protests linked to an alleged eviction from a gold mining site. In that case, authorities said the use of force followed attempts by demonstrators to storm a police post.
The recurrence of such incidents has sparked renewed debate over policing methods during civil unrest, with human rights groups calling for restraint and adherence to established protocols on crowd control.

The clashes in Mbeere North also come amid heightened national concern over rising insecurity and politically linked violence. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen recently stated that security agencies had been given full backing to deal firmly with lawlessness, including incidents involving organised groups.
“The Inspector General has full support to act decisively against those who threaten public order,” Murkomen said in a recent address, signalling a tougher stance on unrest across the country.
As investigations into the Mbeere North incident begin, attention is expected to focus on the circumstances surrounding the use of live ammunition and whether proper procedures were followed.
Meanwhile, residents continue to demand urgent intervention to address the challenges facing Ishiara Level 4 Hospital, insisting that improved healthcare services are essential to preventing further unrest.
