Former MCA Aspirant Reportedly Abducted in Nairobi as Rights Groups Demand Answers

NAIROBI, Kenya – Concern is growing over the whereabouts of politician and former Mabatini Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) aspirant Joel Kariuki Mwai after reports emerged that he was allegedly abducted by unidentified men claiming to be police officers in Nairobi’s Mathare area.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on Thursday afternoon, June 18, has sparked outrage among human rights organizations, political leaders, and residents, who are demanding immediate clarification from security agencies regarding the politician’s disappearance.

According to information shared by human rights organization VOCAL Africa, the 45-year-old politician was heading home from his business premises in Mathare Number 10 when he was intercepted by a group of men dressed in civilian clothing.

In a statement, the rights group said the men identified themselves as police officers before allegedly forcing Mwai into a waiting vehicle.

“He was walking from his shop in Mathare Number 10 towards his home when he was approached by several men dressed in civilian clothes who claimed to be police officers,” VOCAL Africa stated.

Witnesses who were present during the incident alleged that the men forcefully seized Mwai before bundling him into a double-cab pickup truck. Residents reportedly attempted to intervene, but their efforts were unsuccessful after the suspected abductors allegedly drew firearms and threatened members of the public.

According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle sped away moments later, leaving residents shocked and confused over the dramatic incident that unfolded in broad daylight.

As of Friday afternoon, June 19, Mwai’s whereabouts remained unknown, raising fears among family members, friends, and supporters.

The reported disappearance has renewed concerns about alleged abductions and enforced disappearances that have continued to attract national attention in recent months.

Mwai is a familiar figure in local politics, having contested the Mabatini Ward MCA seat during the 2022 General Election under the Jubilee Party ticket. Although unsuccessful in his bid for elective office, he remained active in community affairs and political engagement within the Mathare area.

Human rights defenders have since called on authorities to launch urgent investigations into the incident and provide information regarding Mwai’s location and safety.

VOCAL Africa Chief Executive Officer Hussein Khalid expressed concern over the allegations, saying any form of unlawful detention or enforced disappearance undermines constitutional protections and the rule of law.

The case has also attracted attention from prominent public figures, including former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, who joined other activists in sharing details of the reported abduction and calling for accountability.

Rights organizations argue that every citizen has a constitutional right to liberty, security, and due process, emphasizing that any arrest should be conducted openly and in accordance with established legal procedures.

“Authorities must urgently account for his whereabouts and ensure that his constitutional rights are protected,” rights advocates stated while calling for transparency in the handling of the matter.

The reported incident comes at a time when concerns over personal security and alleged abductions continue to dominate public discourse, with civil society organizations repeatedly urging security agencies to uphold human rights standards and strengthen accountability mechanisms.

Neither the National Police Service nor other security agencies had issued an official statement regarding the allegations by the time of publication.

Family members and supporters have continued to appeal for information that could help establish Mwai’s whereabouts, while rights groups insist that a prompt response from authorities is necessary to ease growing public concern.

As investigations and inquiries continue, attention is now focused on whether security agencies will provide clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the politician’s disappearance and the claims made by eyewitnesses and human rights organizations.

The case is expected to intensify ongoing conversations about human rights, public safety, and accountability within Kenya’s security sector as calls for answers continue to grow.
