Florida Man Gets Life Sentence After Foiled Assassination Attempt on President Trump
A Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison following a foiled attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump at a golf course in 2024, concluding a high-profile federal case that drew national attention and underscored ongoing concerns about the security of public officials.
Ryan Wesley Routh, 59, was on Tuesday, February 4, handed a life sentence plus an additional 84 months by U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon after a federal jury found him guilty on all five counts, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate. Prosecutors said the sentence reflected the gravity of the crime and the level of premeditation involved.
The incident occurred in September 2024 at Trump International Golf Club in Florida, where President Trump was playing golf under the protection of the U.S. Secret Service. According to court testimony, Special Agent Robert Fercano, who was positioned one hole ahead of the then presidential candidate, noticed suspicious movement along the fence line bordering the course.

Agent Fercano told the court that he saw Routh concealed in a sniper-style hide, pointing what appeared to be an AK-47-style rifle directly at him. Fearing an imminent threat to both his life and the President’s safety, the agent fired at the suspect, prompting Routh to flee the scene.
Investigators later recovered a Norinco SKS rifle fitted with a scope from the location where the suspect had been hiding. Authorities said the firearm was loaded with 19 rounds in the magazine and an additional round in the chamber, indicating it was ready to fire. Steel armour plates and a camera mounted on the fence and aimed at the sixth green—where Trump was expected to play—were also found at the scene.
A civilian witness reported seeing Routh run across a nearby roadway before jumping into a black Nissan Xterra and speeding away. Acting on that information, officers from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office intercepted and arrested him as he travelled north on Interstate 95, with assistance from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
A search of Routh’s vehicle revealed multiple mobile phones and a document outlining international flight options and directions to Miami International Airport. Prosecutors said the materials suggested a planned escape following the attack.
Data extracted from the phones showed that Routh had tracked Trump’s movements for nearly a month prior to the incident. Between August 18 and September 15, 2024, his devices connected repeatedly to cell towers near Trump International Golf Club and the Mar-a-Lago estate.
Investigators also presented evidence of a handwritten letter Routh had left at a witness’s home months earlier. The note explicitly referred to the planned act as an assassination attempt. “Dear World, this was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I am so sorry I failed you,” the letter read.

U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi said the crime went beyond an attack on one individual. “Ryan Routh’s heinous attempted assassination of President Trump was not only an attack on our President, it was a direct assault against our entire democratic system,” she said in a statement following the sentencing.
The two-week trial, held in Fort Pierce, Florida, featured testimony from Secret Service agents, forensic experts, and local law enforcement officers. The investigation involved a coordinated effort by the FBI Miami Field Office, the U.S. Secret Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and several county sheriff’s offices.

Judge Cannon said the life sentence reflected the need to protect the public and deter similar acts of political violence, noting that the evidence demonstrated careful planning and a clear intent to kill. With sentencing concluded, federal authorities said Routh will be transferred to a high-security facility to begin serving his term.
