Dutch King Tells Ruto to Respect Human Rights: ‘Kenyans Want Their Voices Heard’

Nairobi – King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands has called on President William Ruto to respect human rights and uphold democracy. Speaking on Tuesday, March 18, during his three-day state visit to Kenya, the Dutch monarch stressed the importance of open dialogue and citizen participation.

“The people of Kenya, like those in the Netherlands, want their rights as free citizens to be respected and their voices heard. I am pleased that our strong relationship allows us to focus on key issues such as human rights, good governance, and accountability during this visit,” Willem-Alexander said.

He further emphasized that later in the day, he would meet young Kenyans to hear their views on recent developments.

“We are grateful to discuss the concerns existing in these areas. Later this morning, we will meet young Kenyans to get their views on recent developments,” he added.

Strengthening Ties Through Key Agreements

During the visit, President Ruto and King Willem-Alexander signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and a Letter of Intent to deepen cooperation. The agreements cover agriculture, trade, industrialization, tourism, climate action, regional security, and people-to-people connections.

“These agreements will enhance Dutch investments in Kenya, strengthen our agricultural and industrial transformation, and drive infrastructure development. This will accelerate our economic growth and create more job opportunities for our youth,” Ruto stated.

The Netherlands remains one of Kenya’s most crucial trading partners in Europe. Ruto acknowledged the Dutch government’s continuous support in various sectors, describing the partnership as essential for Kenya’s economic transformation.

“We value this partnership and are committed to strengthening our ties, expanding economic opportunities, and fostering sustainable collaborations that drive progress in both nations,” Ruto added.

Human Rights Concerns Take Center Stage

The Dutch King’s remarks come at a time when concerns about governance, police brutality, and democratic freedoms in Kenya have sparked public outcry. Many Kenyans have criticized the government’s handling of protests and dissenting voices.

With King Willem-Alexander’s strong emphasis on human rights, his visit is expected to push Kenya toward more inclusive governance and respect for civil liberties.

The leaders addressed the media after bilateral talks at State House, Nairobi, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic relations.

As Kenya deepens its international relations, the Dutch King’s message serves as a reminder that democracy thrives on respect for human rights and accountability.
