Details of 7 Killed in Mt Ololokwe Helicopter Crash Emerge as Probe Begins

The identities of seven people killed in a helicopter crash near Mt Ololokwe in Samburu County have emerged as investigators begin work to establish what caused the fatal accident.

The victims were identified as pilot Josh Outram and six passengers: Roger Duarte, Adam Navaty, Stephen Vasconquez, Henry Parra, Michael Contugi and Suian Suarez.

Suarez was the only woman among the seven people aboard the aircraft.

The helicopter, a Eurocopter EC130 B4 registered as 5Y-GYM, was flying from Soyian in Laikipia County towards Loisaba Conservancy when it crashed in the rugged Mt Ololokwe area.

The accident triggered a multi-agency response, with police, emergency teams and recovery personnel deployed to the remote site.

Pilot Josh Outram Remembered

Outram was a fourth-generation Kenyan whose life was closely connected to aviation, tourism and conservation in northern Kenya.

He had more than 15 years of flying experience and worked across both commercial and conservation aviation.

Outram also founded an African helicopter company that offered aerial services to visitors travelling to remote destinations while supporting conservation operations.

His company provided aerial assistance to Loisaba Conservancy and neighbouring conservation areas, including wildlife monitoring, animal translocations and darting operations.

His extensive knowledge of northern Kenya made him a familiar figure within the region’s tourism and conservation sectors.

Outram had previously spoken about his love for the Suguta Valley, describing it as one of his favourite flying routes.

The area is known for its dramatic landscape, including volcanic craters, lava formations, river sandbanks and expansive lake beds.

His aviation journey reportedly began at an early age. He later obtained a private pilot licence before advancing to commercial qualifications and building extensive flying experience across Kenya.

Investigation Into Crash Underway

The release of the victims’ identities comes as authorities begin a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed the aircraft type and registration as investigators moved to secure evidence from the crash site.

The Ministry of Roads and Transport’s Air Accident Investigation Department is leading the technical investigation.

Investigators are expected to examine the helicopter wreckage, flight records, available communications and other evidence that could help reconstruct the aircraft’s final moments.

The remote location of the crash presents additional challenges for recovery and investigation teams, particularly because of the rugged terrain surrounding Mt Ololokwe.

Police and emergency personnel have continued supporting the recovery operation while investigators work to document the scene.

Cause of Crash Yet to Be Established

Authorities have not yet established what caused the helicopter to crash.

Investigators are expected to consider several possibilities as part of the inquiry, including weather conditions, mechanical problems, human factors and other circumstances that may have affected the flight.

No specific cause has been officially attributed to the accident.

The nationalities of the six passengers have also not been officially confirmed as identification and notification procedures continue.

The development has drawn attention to the risks associated with aviation operations in Kenya’s remote conservation and tourism regions, where helicopters are frequently used to access areas that are difficult to reach by road.

The investigation will therefore be closely watched as aviation authorities seek to determine whether the crash resulted from an aircraft-related problem, environmental conditions, operational factors or a combination of circumstances.

For the families of the seven victims, however, the immediate priority remains recovery and identification as authorities work to complete the necessary procedures.

Officials are expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses, but for now, the cause of the Mt Ololokwe helicopter crash remains unknown.
