DCI Nabs Suspect Linked to Githurai Roundabout Vehicle Arson
The arrest, announced on Tuesday, comes as security agencies intensify efforts to identify and prosecute individuals accused of engaging in criminal activities during demonstrations linked to rising fuel prices and the cost of living.
According to the DCI, the suspect, described as a content creator, was apprehended in Ruiru following weeks of investigations and intelligence gathering aimed at tracing individuals captured in videos circulating online after the incident.
Authorities said detectives followed multiple leads before successfully locating and arresting the suspect, who is now being processed as investigations continue.

In a statement, the investigative agency confirmed that evidence collected so far points to the suspect’s alleged involvement in the arson attack that unfolded during the demonstrations.
“Detectives have arrested a suspect believed to have been involved in the arson attack on a motor vehicle at Githurai Roundabout during the recent violent fuel-related demonstrations,” the DCI stated.
The agency added that investigations remain active, with officers pursuing additional suspects believed to have participated in the destruction of property during the unrest.
According to investigators, the arrest is part of a wider operation targeting individuals accused of orchestrating or participating in acts of violence, vandalism, and arson during public protests.
The incident at the center of the investigations occurred on May 19 along the busy Thika Road corridor, where demonstrators clashed with security officers during protests sparked by concerns over fuel prices.
The destruction of the vehicle caused significant disruption to traffic flow along the highway, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded as authorities struggled to contain the situation.
The agency revealed that forensic teams had begun reviewing numerous clips and images that emerged online shortly after the vehicle was torched.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has received and is currently analysing viral video footage that is believed to feature individuals among the prime suspects involved in the torching of a Mazda CX-5 along Thika Road during today’s protests,” the agency stated following the incident.
Security officials believe digital evidence, including videos, photographs, and witness statements, has played a critical role in advancing the investigation and identifying persons of interest.
The latest arrest comes amid broader concerns by government officials over what they describe as the infiltration of otherwise peaceful demonstrations by criminal elements seeking to exploit public protests for unlawful activities.
The Ministry of Interior has repeatedly warned against acts of violence, destruction of property, and looting during demonstrations, insisting that individuals found culpable will face legal consequences regardless of their political affiliations.
Investigators have indicated that additional arrests are expected as they continue reviewing evidence and tracking down other suspects linked to the incident.
Meanwhile, security agencies have stepped up surveillance and intelligence operations in several urban centers following reports that organized criminal groups may be taking advantage of public protests to commit offences.

As the country gradually shifts attention toward future political contests, security officials say maintaining law and order during public demonstrations will remain a top priority.
