Chaos at NTSA Headquarters as Protesters Demand DG George Njao’s Immediate Resignation

Tensions flared outside the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) headquarters on Thursday morning, October 23, as angry protesters demanded the resignation of Director General George Njao. The demonstration, led by the Road Safety Association of Kenya, brought traffic to a standstill and ignited a national conversation on road safety and corruption.

“The DG Should Step Down and Go”

Chanting slogans and waving placards, the protesters accused NTSA of enabling rampant corruption in the transport sector. They claimed that negligence and bribery had fueled the rising number of road accidents.

“It is the Kenyan people who pay for this office, and they are also the ones who pay their salaries. So if they are unable to do the work, the DG should step down and go,” said David Njoroge Kierie, the association’s chairperson.

He added that the group had submitted a formal petition demanding Njao’s removal.

“We will give our petition and follow the law as is expected. The law is very clear that if someone is unable to undertake their role anymore, they should go,” Kierie emphasized.

“1.2 Million Vehicles Uninspected, Ksh7.2 Billion in Bribes”

The association dropped a bombshell, alleging that over 1.2 million vehicles had not been inspected in 2024. They claimed this lapse had generated Ksh7.2 billion in bribes.

“This is not just incompetence. It’s a deliberate failure that endangers lives daily,” one protester shouted.

Additionally, they revealed that more than four million smart driving licences had been issued but remained unused.

“Why deliver licences that no one uses? Where is the accountability?” another protester asked.

“No Contract, No Oversight”

The group also criticized NTSA’s adoption of the smart licence system. They claimed no formal contract had been signed, weakening the authority’s legal and technical oversight.

“Without a contract, how do you ensure transparency? This is a recipe for disaster,” Kierie warned.

“EACC Has Done Nothing for Two Years”

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) didn’t escape criticism either. Protesters accused the agency of ignoring damning audit reports.

“All the auditor general’s reports have been on the EACC desk for over two years,” Kierie lamented.

As pressure mounts, Kenyans are demanding swift action, accountability, and leadership that prioritizes safety over profit.
