“In a ceremony hosted at the UN Complex, I formally assumed leadership of the G77+China from H.E. Wael Nasreidin Attiya, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Kenya is honoured to take the Chair of this important group’s Nairobi Chapter,” said Namwamba.

Namwamba acknowledged the weight of his new responsibility.
“In my acceptance speech, I commended H.E. Attiya and Egypt for the exemplary leadership of the group, and committed to maintaining the trajectory of consensus and mutual respect in pursuing the shared interests of the G77+China,” he stated.
With Nairobi hosting global UN agencies such as UNEP and UN-Habitat, Namwamba believes the city’s role in global diplomacy is unmatched.
“Nairobi is the global capital for environmental diplomacy,” he noted. He pledged to strengthen South-South cooperation through the G77+China platform.

“It is crucial to mobilize common positions ahead of the Seventh Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA7),” he said.
Namwamba’s appointment comes shortly after he was dropped from Ruto’s Cabinet during the July 24 reshuffle. Since then, he had taken a break from public service. However, his swift return to a powerful international role has left political watchers talking.
