Heavy Traffic, Closed Roads as KAA Issues Urgent Advisory for JKIA and Wilson Travelers
Travelers heading to JKIA and Wilson Airport on Sunday, August 3, were thrown into confusion after the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) issued a sudden traffic advisory, rerouting airport-bound traffic due to the CHAN 2025 football tournament.
With Nairobi hosting the crucial African Nations Championship (CHAN) match between Harambee Stars and the Democratic Republic of Congo at Moi International Sports Centre, major city roads have been closed, sparking panic among passengers rushing to catch flights.
In an official statement, KAA confirmed:
“Nairobi is today hosting a key match of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), one of Africa’s premier football tournaments,” it read.
“To facilitate smooth movement of teams, officials, and fans, and to enhance security around the match venue, several roads will be fully closed or partially restricted.“
Here’s What You Need to Know:
For Aerodrome Road, now fully closed from Madaraka roundabout to Bunyala roundabout, passengers have been urged to use Likoni-Enterprise Road or the Southern Bypass via Mombasa Road.

For those using Lang’ata Road, which faces a one-way closure from Madaraka to Lusaka roundabout, alternative routes include Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road to reach the CBD.
Mombasa Road, partially closed from Lusaka to Bunyala roundabout, will also disrupt normal traffic. In response, KAA advised motorists to take Limuru Road or Kiambu Road when heading toward Thika, Ruiru, Juja, or surrounding towns.
And that’s not all. KAA cautioned travelers to recheck their flight details and adjust travel plans accordingly.
“Passengers are strongly urged to check flight schedules and allow for prolonged travel times to ensure timely arrival at JKIA or Wilson Airport,” the authority warned.
Many Kenyans took to social media expressing frustration, with some fearing they would miss their international flights.

KAA wrapped up its advisory with a final plea: “Kindly plan ahead and remain alert to avoid disruptions.“
