Clashing Youth Groups From Huruma and Kiamaiko Throw Outering Road Into Chaos

Monday afternoon turned chaotic along Nairobi’s busy Outering Road as fierce clashes between rival groups from Huruma and Kiamaiko broke out, halting traffic for hours.

The tension, which has been brewing for over a week, boiled over near Allsops to Kariobangi Roundabout, spreading rapidly into Riverside as police struggled to restore order.

Motorists were trapped. Commuters fled. Businesses shut down.

Local police arrived fast, but the violence escalated.

“We’re doing all we can to control the situation. These groups have become a serious security threat,” said a senior police officer at the scene.

Youths, some armed with stones and crude weapons, lit fires and blocked sections of the road, paralyzing movement. This came just days after similar skirmishes shook the area last Thursday.

The cause of the conflict remains unclear. However, unconfirmed reports point to a turf war over control of a bus stage in Kariobangi.

“They started fighting after a man was killed by a mob last week in Kiamaiko,” said a resident who requested anonymity.

According to the eyewitness, the man was suspected of theft and his death angered a section of the community, which believes he was wrongly targeted.

“We protested because justice hasn’t been served. They just watched him die,” one protester shouted while waving a placard.

By 4 p.m., traffic alerts began circulating online.

“Traffic disruption has been reported along Outering Road between Allsops and the Kariobangi roundabout,” read a security update shared by local authorities.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes like Jogoo Road or the Eastern Bypass.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds as armored trucks sealed off hotspots. Despite heavy presence, clashes continued well into the evening.

“It’s like war. We haven’t opened shop since Thursday,” lamented a trader near Riverside.

Footage shows masked youths throwing rocks and blocking vehicles. The situation mirrors previous unrest in Nairobi’s informal settlements.

Security agencies are now on high alert.

“We can’t allow this kind of lawlessness to continue. We will arrest all those involved,” vowed the area OCS.
