Protests Rock Nanyuki As Locals Demand Answers Over Julia Njoki’s Death In Police Custody
Tension gripped Nanyuki town on Monday, July 14, as scores of locals stormed the streets, demanding justice for Julia Njoki, a 24-year-old woman who died mysteriously in police custody. Armed with placards and fiery chants, the demonstrators braved a heavy police presence.
Despite visible deployment of anti-riot officers and police trucks patrolling the area from as early as 7 a.m., the crowd grew louder and larger by midday. Their message was loud and clear.
“We want answers. Julia did not deserve to die this way,” shouted one protester, tears streaking down her face.
A Tragedy Ignites a Movement
Njoki was reportedly arrested on Monday, July 7, while heading home after the Saba Saba demonstrations. According to her family, she was not a protester but was unfortunately caught in the chaos.

“She was just trying to get home. She didn’t even participate in the protests,” claimed her grandmother.
After being taken to Nanyuki Law Courts, Njoki was granted a cash bail of Ksh50,000. Sadly, her family could not afford the amount, resulting in her being held at Nanyuki GK Prison. That is where, her family alleges, she was assaulted, leading to her untimely death.
Fear, Pain, and an Urgent Cry for Justice
Residents had already threatened to demonstrate if the government failed to act. That warning became a reality on Monday, with loud chants of “Justice for Njoki!” echoing throughout the town.
“We will not rest until we get the truth,” declared a local youth leader during the protest.
The crowd, mostly made up of youth and women, walked through the streets holding signs that read “Her Blood Cries Out!” and “Stop Killing Our Daughters!”
Njoki’s death has stirred anger across Laikipia County, and the entire nation is watching. Several human rights organizations have also picked up her case. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) confirmed that 31 people have died since the start of the Saba Saba protests.
“This level of brutality is unacceptable. The state must be held accountable,” stated a KNCHR official.
The Family’s Grief
Njoki’s family is still in shock. They are yet to come to terms with the loss of a bright young woman who had dreams and hopes for the future.
“She wanted to open a hair salon,” her mother said, sobbing. “Now she’s gone. Just like that.”
A post-mortem is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, to determine the exact cause of her death. Meanwhile, the family insists she had no political affiliations or intentions of joining protests.
“She was innocent. Her only crime was walking home,” her uncle lamented.
